Just a different take on many topics discussed here...

Go to Yahoo.com and look at comments posted on such issues as Obama, Gulf oil spill, etc... Take a careful look at the comments posted in reply to an article about Target donating $150,000 to a conservative's campaign who is adamantly against gay marriage. The people who wrote just about all of those comments are what's wrong with this country. So sad to see that people in 2010 feel the way they do. Many of them preach about God and Jesus, and how "wrong and evil" it is to be gay. WOW!!!! If they knew anything about the fundamentals of what Jesus preached, they would accept and love their fellow neighbor, despite their sexual orientation. These ignorant fools make me physically sick.

i completely agree with you. most of those comments are blatently and outright offensive, so i stopped reading them long ago. if i cared what those people had to say i would rattle their cages to wake them up..i read the articles and make up my mind and am not swayed by what 100 idiot amatuer bloggers/commentators at the end of the article have to say...

i always used to say you had to have a think skin to do a lot of posting on the train because it used to get pretty heated, but sites like yahoo, msnbc, my local paper's website, and even youtube takes all of the bashing of comments to a higher level..

I am actually preparing to do a study on the internet, anonymity and posting on forums. in fact it is one of th reasons I participate here. Other than being a giant pearljam fan, it is nice to have a forum that isn't nearly as full of name calling like faggot, queer, nigger. After spending countless hours on other forums reading, this one is actually pretty refreshing. People usually have something intelligent to say, at least the people I have come to see posts from everyday.
That is what my study is actually going to be about. I cannot tell you how much time I have spent on forums and I will say, I think YOUTUBE is the worst.

The best unintentional comedy is found on the ESPN.com comment pages. It's one thing to see two anonymous poster go after each other on abortion, but it is quite amusing to see the same amount of vitriol spent by Jets and Giants fans arguing which team the new stadium was built for.

i would like to see that study when it gets finished. are you publishing or is it for a class or for your own knowledge? there is no shortage of sites you can go to to see that phenomenon. this forum is like kindergarten in that most of us get along even if we disagree compared to some of the other sites/forums out there. i have learned so much from posters on here over the last few years, i think that is why i keep coming back.

i think i got offended in the "are people this bored" thread because a few of the initial comments in there reminded me of the comments i would see on yahoo or youtube and i kind of got a little bothered by that...

i would really like to see the results of your study though.

I think there is a big difference in courtesy / respect shown in online debate depending on whether or not the site requires you to create an account. I think that small step filters out about 60% of the assholes.

I'm sure there would be a larger chasm if this was a Nickleback or Korn forum as well :D

I'm not trying to call you out, but the Bible presents several verses which preach against homosexuality.

You can reference them at carm.org/homosexuality. Not trying to kick the bee's nest, but you made a generalization which I feel is untrue. There is no place where the believer is told to show hatred, nor any place where it is said God directs hatred to the homosexual. The radicals are out there, I agree.

I do, however, agree with your assessment of the comments on Yahoo.

But aren't there many other verses in the old testament that are blatantly ignored?

So why is the homosexuality one any different? I'm actually curious.

Doesn't "God" forgive and love all?? I cannot imagine a "God" who doesn't love homosexuals. Let's not forget where the current Christian bible comes from. What we know as the bible comes from the Roman Emperor Constantine. He had a "vision" on a battlefield and suddenly became a Christian, thus forcing it upon everyone else. He chose what gospels would be in the bible, and he chose which ones (which are many) to leave out. If your faith guides you to live a moral life, then I am all for it. Hard-core Bible people take it literally, I just cannot understand that. Do you need a book to tell you what's right and what's wrong? Isn't it an instinct built in all of us? The bible may condemn homosexuality, but it was written by MEN many many years ago. I don't need a book to tell me to accept and love people for their differences.

i think the worst i have ever seen was arguewitheveryone.com. it's supposedly a political forum that for the most is un moderated. someone posted a link to something there once and i couldn't believe my eyes.

    just terrible.

Yes! I agree 100%. It shows how uneducated, misinformed, and ignorant the majority of people in this country are.
    It's really sad.

you can't pay attention to these people. EVERYONE is on the internet now.. and we all know everyone is not smart. numbers game
  • I grew up in a home that my mother is a Jehovah's Witness and my father is Church of England Christian. I went to the Witness meetings, and bible studies until I was old enough (about 12) to say I didn't want to go anymore, while still going to church for my father's scouting parade's etc.

As children we all accept that what our parents say is true, yet I was put in a position that my mom said it was a sin to eat certain foods, that if I needed certain treatments, she would just pray instead, that certain films and music was banned from the house (and not the ones you would expect either - I was not allowed to see Short Circuit, a movie about a robot that comes alive as this was possesion and against nature!) and that unless I followed the lord's way I would not get through Armageddon. On the other side my father ate the food's, liked the films, and didn't pray instead of allowing medical procedures. (How they stayed together I do not know).

Due to all this I was pretty confused over religion, and ultimately have got to the point where I feel that organised religion of any kind is an outdated ideal. I do not count myself as religous as this would lead m to follow a set of guidelines that have been decided by man, not a higher power. I don't know if I believe in a God at all, but what I do believe in, is leading a good life. I know that if I have got it wrong, when I meet my maker I will be able to stand up straight and say "I have led a good life, I have bent the occasional rule regarding piracy, age rules, weed and a few other things, but they are laws of the country I live in not any more. Morally I don't knowingly take advantage of people, and will always help anyone I can.

I believe a forgiving God would not cast me away, and then welcome some of the hate mongering religous zealots around the world (of all religions!) into his kingdom.

    My 2p's worth.

it really is insane. These people that post on Yahoo have absolutely no clue about anything. They know nothing about politics, history, economics, nothing. All the posts are either misinformed unedcuated, or simply hate-filled drivel.

    I weep for American society.

I have to go now, I am going to the mall to buy a bunch of crap I don't need, and my girlfriend is going to buy a bunch of high-priced shoes and pocketbooks that were made in either the Philippines or Malaysia by a 10 year old in a sweat shop. But who cares?!?! Look at my new shoes...yay!!
And then, we are going to watch America's Got Talent and So You Think You Can Dance......they're on Tivo!!!

the thing that concerns me about posts on sites like that are when they are manufactured ... i'm convinced many political groups or corporations pay people to post everywhere to slant public perception ...

i read thestar.com ... which is a toronto newspaper that most would say is fairly liberal ... which i think sort of represents most torontonians ... you would read an article about how harper (current right wing PM) did something and you will undoubtedly get these posts that have absolutely nothing to do with the subject but blast the opposition parties ... you'll get someone make a fairly valid point and there will be like a bunch of people who disagree but don't post why ...
