Neil Young will perform several shows on the Gulf Coast next month as he hooks up with Tyson Foods to help those whose lives have been affected by the BP oil spill.

Turns out Young and Tyson Foods chairman John Tyson are friends, resulting in the company donating 100,000 pounds of chicken products to be distributed by the Bay Area Food Bank, which serves communities in Alabama, Florida and Mississippi. The game plan calls for Tyson to deliver four truckloads of chicken – the equivalent of almost 400,000 meals – to the food bank.

Young is also asking fans to bring non-perishable food items to his shows for donation to the food bank. In addition, all proceeds from the sale of unique, limited-edition Young T-shirts, available only at the concerts, will be donated.

“Millions of people who live along the Gulf Coast struggle with hunger and the economic impact of the oil spill has only made matters worse,” Young said. “I appreciate the willingness of John Tyson and his company to get involved by helping the regional food bank help feed those in need. We both encourage concertgoers to spend money locally and support local business.”

The tour begins in Panama City, Fla., at the Marina Civic Center Sept. 20. Also on the schedule is Biloxi at IP Showroom Sept. 25; Mobile at the Saenger Theatre Sept. 26 and Pensacola at the Saenger Theatre Sept. 28.

Previously announced dates in Florida – Clearwater at Ruth Eckerd Hall Sept. 22 and Hollywood at Seminole Hard Rock Casino Sept. 23 – are not part of the Gulf Coast Tour.

Biloxi is already on sale while Panama City goes up Aug. 13. Mobile and Pensacola go on sale Aug. 14. For more information, click here for Neil Young’s website.
