Poster Questions
Dear kind PJ poster coolios,
I was just wondering how the PJ posters work, what is A/P? Artist's Print? Aren't they all prints? What is the difference between a signed/numbered print and one that looks exactly the same but with no number/sig? When 10c sell posters, do they sell them S/N?
In case it's not blindingly obvious, I am a newbie poster geek, just received my very first one in the mail today and am wondering wondering how the poster gig works. And no, I'm not trying to figure out the worth of my poster on ebay, I'm not ashamed to say that it bought a tear to my eye when I unrolled it, it's mine for as long as I am mine!! (see that what I did just there)
It's official, my first poster: Christchurch '09. Just. Epic.
Appreciate any answers, cheers

and that poster you have is a great one, I have mine in a solid black frame and it looks good (for a very cheap frame)
Hoff, that's your cue!

Poster tubes are for mailing purposes only,
( * Roller Marks - from being rolled up in the tube for so long the poster board / paper literally gets rolls every half inch or so . )
Definitely not for storage.

I also store all of my prints in a presentation portfolio case- the best 200 + bucks i have ever spent ( besides the actual costs of my prints

I ordered two posters on Monday thru 10c - Hartford and Boston. I got 2 emails right after, confirming receipt of my order....I received one email on Tuesday, indicating my order would be shipped...
I understand from the Goods section that the posters are mailed separately.....should I be receiving another email confirming the mailing...or should I consider the one email for both?? The second email did not specify what the order was that was being shipped

Gotcha!
This is general art collecting info:
-Limited editions are prints which are numbered, limited to that number that is designated by the artist. So each print will have consecutive numbers: 1/250 2/250 3/250 4/250 all the way up to 249/250 250/250.
-Artist's proofs used to be a test run of prints for the artist, and then when they had a good test run, the artist approves the run for production, and the prints on-hand the artist would write "AP" or "Artist Proof" and number them out of a lower quantity. 1/25 2/25 3/25 and so on.
-Open edition prints - most artists in the fine-art world will not offer open-edition prints (unsigned, unnumbered) if they are offering limited editions. But for these concert posters, to my knowledge, are only available as either Open editions or AP's.
...since AP's are inherently more limited than the other two categories, they are typically more valuable.
The longer a poster sits in a tube, the more the paper remembers that shape and the harder it is to get flat later on. Also, brown tubes are acidic. That means that they outgas and that can stain a poster yellow, and make them drier and more brittle. Short term it's negligible, but long term it's something to be concerned about. If tube storage is absolutely necessary for long term, don't use brown tubes, use clear or PVC tubes as those shouldn't have any acidity, though you'll still have the curl in the paper to deal with.
Buy some acid free foamboard (though regular "shiny" foamboard is ok short term) that is larger than the poster. Carefully unroll the poster and sandwich the poster between two sheets of AF Foamboard. Once the two foamboard pieces are holding the piece flat, you can lay on a table and put some books evenly around, and this should help press the poster flat to retain a flatter shape.
now if you'll excuse me... there are some children drowning that I should have gotten out 10 minutes ago...

Also - the importance of the "acid-free" storage as Hoff explained - those brown tubes are some of the worst storage devices you can use - almost instantly, those acid "bugs" will be crawling all over waiting to eat up the print.
if portfolio and pages are too expensive, try using giant poly bags and acid-free backing board - cost is about $3 per storage page for bag and board at most places - art stores, packaging/shipping suppliers etc
and, fyi...i just got my second email shipping confirmation....

Thanks so much for all handy information! So A/P stands for artists proof I get it now. I can't wait to get mine framed! Hoff I'd be looking in your direction if I didn't live on the bottom of the earth....
So, my poster is signed and numbered out of 205, but it's not a "proof" because it's out of 205! If I had have ordered it through 10c or bought at the concert, it would have been an "open edition" right? I think I get it!
Thanks heaps for taking the time to look after poster geek girl everyone

Hey, just wondered what size this is.... and where you got it.. thanks
http://www.jerrysartarama.com/discount- ... -Cases.htm
ooh..thanks for that...some good deals on there
I know this is a stupid question but what size are most posters? Thanks a lot for your help.
Usually 18" x 24"... but every single stinking poster I own is a little bigger or a little smaller... Then there's the Berlin 2010's and SanFransisco 2009's which are their own odd sizes.
…So I guess I should say 'approximately' 18" x 24"…
go check on expresso beans
they have dimensions for most of them
