it fell off a glacier you say??? glaciers move, yes?? so my theory is this chunk fell off the glacier(as they do) cause it met fluid warmer water. the force of the glacier behind it caused the split perhaps due to an unusual weakness. thats what i reckon. cause afterall the ice at the front of the glacier has to go somewhere if its being pushed from behind, right?
is it only the size of the berg thats baffling them?

i watched the video ... i don't recall any scientists being baffled - they just said it was a shock ... they are pretty sure they know why it fell off ... 2010 will be the warmest year on record when all is said and done ... we've had mass flooding in pakistan and china; huge droughts in senegal; typhoons in the phillipines ... the death toll associated with extreme weather events will be well over 10,000 people this year ... mostly in poorer countries where they lack infrastructure to deal with it ... this obviously doesn't count the number of displaced people and those who are now ill or injured ...
and to answer the question on how this is important ... it is as follows:
the breaking off of the glacier will result in many things but the primary ones are a) sea level rise - there is a pacific island nation that has been relatively self-sufficient for a long time that will soon evacuate ... b) this glacier will soon melt - mixing fresh water with salt water ... this change in salt levels will have affects on the marine ecosystem ... obviously, just one piece won't do it but if more pieces fall off - this will be the case ... c) sea ice and/or glaciers generate the albedo effect which essentially means the white surface reflects the suns rays back into space ... this is critical because as y'all know - the warming temperatures are key to climate change ... without this sea ice - more of the suns rays will be absorbed by the earth's surface thus magnifying the warming ...
