Casinos or the lottery

Just an idea about the deficit, couldn't the federal government open casinos or create a lottery like the powerball?...what stops them from doing so? States have the lottery, why doesn't the Federal Gov't get on board? Man the could raise a lot of money fast. Between that and legalized marijuana, we could actually pay down the debt.
Anyone have any insight as to why the feds don't do this?

    Cause they'd do it wrong.

And while Casinos make $...it's not as easy as just taxing people more. You don't have to provide showgirls or free drinks to tax people more....well you do but just for Congress and some lobbyists, not everyone.

It's a good way to tax the poor and middle class.

casinos don't make money, they redistribute it to the rich while the poor get poorer.

Or they could just spend our money more responsibly and tax corporations they way they used too which would remove our deficit over time...

    CONservative governMENt

Our government is the potent, the omnipresent teacher. For good or for ill, it teaches the whole people by its example. Crime is contagious. If the government becomes a law-breaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy. - Louis Brandeis

it isn't really a tax, it is voluntary, you don't have to gamble and you don't have to buy lottery tickets. If you choose to do it it is up to you. Also, rich people gamble too,
and yes, it is a good way to "tax" people, by giving them a choice to give the feds the money or not. I know I wouldn't go to a federally run casino, but I would probably buy some powerball type tickets. Someone has got to win. Plus we could get a whole bunch of new jobs for people. Seems like a good solution for the tax issues that are always around. Not only would they get the profits, but they would also get to tax the winnings!

Man, I can just see the possibilities, I should run on this platform. I would call it the degenerate party and run on legalizing prostitution, drugs, and a federal casino/lottery to pay for all of my "give drugs to kids" programs through gambling.

its called an addiction which the casino owners prey on. Looks like someone needs to relax. We all have our own opinions

I'll agree that the gamblers need to recognize that they are being taken advantage of, just like smokers need to realize cigarettes are killing them. But thats unfortunately the nature of an addiction. Either way i'm still against the methodology of a casino. Large businesses need to be taxed more before we start going after the middle and lower class

No it is a tax on people who are bad at math whether poor, middle class or rich.

    SHOW COUNT: (164) 1990's=3, 2000's=53, 2010/20's=108, US=118, CAN=15, Europe=20 ,New Zealand=4, Australia=5
    Mexico=1, Colombia=1

If large businesses are taxed more, that cost will go somewhere...it is basically just taxing the people who use those products, which I actually in favor of over income taxes (i.e a sales tax). Whether it is walmart, target, or anderson windows, those costs will be passed on to the consumer. I don't buy the whole jobs argument, that raising taxes on businesses will cost jobs, if anything it will make the companies invest more in themselves rather than taking profits...but the cost of those taxes will be passed on.
and going after the middle and lower class? Some people actually enjoy gambling. I go into a good old fashioned craps game expecting to lose a little money, it is just fun to play. But the idea that this some how is going after the poor or middle class is ridiculous... A gambling addiction is like any other addiction, while it sucks a person has that problem, if they aren't getting help it isn't anyone elses fault. I don't hear anyone calling for food to be made cheaper so as not to take advantage of the people who are food addicts...

Impossible. How would the feds balance pandering to the religious right, while openly running a gambling racket?

Well, aside from the giving drugs to kids part...I'd say one man's degenerate behaviour is another's ideal Friday night ;) I'd vote for ya.

thanks ... between you and my mom I would likely have one vote!!

the religious right are too busy protesting two people who love each other getting married, we could sneak it in and say something like..."we may not be great, but at least we aren't allowing gay marriage..." that should fool them into voting for me...then I can turn around and break that campaign promise.

Here's a better idea. LOWER THE COST OF GOVERNMENT.

I completely agree, but it will never happen. At least this way they can raise their "revenue" without a directly raising taxes on anyone.

I guess when we all just shrug our shoulders and give up, it probably will never happen.

    I sense your sarcasm.
I vote for people who want smaller government, what more can I do, I have no interest in running for office, and I do not want to donate a huge amount of my time and money to get people elected who turn out to be frauds anyway. Would anyone have a problem with universal healthcare if the bills were paid by people voluntarily going to a casino? the consistent growth of the federal government is not something I care to support, but at this point our country is moving to a more centralized government with less and less left up to states. We really are no longer the united states of america, we are simply the united states. We are moving to a central government, not a collection of states that have rights...I hate it, but I don't know what else to do but participate in the process to the best of my ability

I agree with you far more than I disagree. If I vote, I always vote for smaller government as well and I do not have any desire to run for office either.

I think any type of government fundraising that is voluntary is far better than any type that is mandatory.

My initial response just comes out of always hearing about new ways to give this tyrannical government more access to money (and therefore reduce our freedoms even more). I'd love to hear someone in government take a stand to REALLY lower the cost of government.
