Scary new banking scams

Scammers have developed a new way to control your computer remotely. And that can only be bad news for your bank balance.

Eastern European criminals ‘harvesting’ thousands of computers across the UK, infected with a special virus allowing them to control the computer and access all sorts of personal information.

Zeus 2

The scam all revolves around the Zeus 2 botnet – sounding like something straight out of a Hollywood script – a Trojan which sits in your computer system.

However, while previous forms of Trojan simply stole your usernames and passwords for certain sites, this botnet goes much further, tracking login information to banks, credit and debit card numbers, account types plus balances, bank statements, browser cookies, client side certificates, login information for email accounts and social networks and even FTP passwords.

It's probably a good idea to read all the article as it has other scams.

After the identity theft experience I went through, I'm starting to think that all of these scams are actually fucking conspiracy stimulus packages....
the company selling the product gets paid, the credit-providing bank gets paid by the insurance company, the insurance company gets bailed out along with the banks...Tax payers and insurance/banking customers (everyone) take the hit. And the beat goes on....The majority of what was fraudulently billed to my credit was preventable (not just by me taking better care of my wallet)....the credit agencies didn't seem to care, and/or were completely inept.

This is pretty scary tho. Don't tell old people or they'll never convert ;).

I find it scary especially as my daughter had a few things on her credit card bill recently that she didn't buy. She has no idea how this happened.

I have an account in the UK where to get online access I have to enter various info on the site, then put a card in a card reader, enter a pin code and if I've done everything right I'm given a unique 8 digit number. I don't know how the hackers can get through this and I feel secure with it. On the other hand I have another account which is just username and password and a couple of security questions. I've stopped using it.

How about mandatory castration for all convicted financial scam hackers. That might be a bit of a deterrent.
