A man who won $NZ60,000 ($A48,040) playing poker at an Auckland casino was refused the jackpot because he had banned himself from the premises for gambling too much, a newspaper reported on Friday.

Sothea Sinn, 28, won the prize playing Caribbean stud poker at Auckland's Skycity Casino on Wednesday, but casino staff refused to pay, saying he was banned at his own request, The Dominion-Post newspaper reported.

"I was absolutely gutted," Sinn told the newspaper.

Sinn said that in 2004 he demanded the casino ban him and his girlfriend because he was gambling too much. He said he thought the ban had expired but casino staff said he had agreed to undergo counselling before re-admission and had not done so.

Sinn said he would take his case to New Zealand gambling authorities.

He should collect his winnings and use them to sue the casino for not banning him properly. Or are frivolous lawsuits only an issue in the States?

Well here in Aust, we once had a lady who tried to sue the bar she was drinking at.. She got drunk, then got behind the wheel and had a car accident. She lost her legs. I'm not sure if she was successful, but she argued they failed to stop serving her and it was their fault....Please

Unfortunate story, but people need to take some responsibility for themselves.

I'm sure if it happened in the US she'd have won several hundred million dollars in the lawsuit.

Well if no one explained to you that coffee was hot...

Well if no one explained to you that coffee was hot...
That plus the fact that they stated in court that the cup said "coffee is hot", but apparently that wasn't clear enough.
Apparently it should have said "coffee is motherfuckin' hot, so don't be a dumbass and hold it between your naked thighs for an excessive period of time or you'll burn you stupid ass skin dumbass".

That is a lot to print on a cup of coffee.

Had the guy lost all his money would the casino have refunded him since he was banned? I think not. They need to pay up.
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

am i the only one with no sympathy for this guy? you put yourself on that list it's pretty clear you shouldn't be in there.

and my best guess is the casino doesn't have a choice in the matter in that if you are on that list you cannot collect winnings regardless of explanations.

He should sue them for millions for allowing him in the casino after the ban request. That's how we do it in America!

Fuck that shit, they should pay. If he lost I am sure they would have no problem taking his money so I don't see any reason he shouldn't get paid.

What if he lost and went back and said, I am not allowed to be here, I want my money back? Think they would give it back to him?

Edit: I obviously didn't read the entire thread, I agree with a Red Sox fan for once.
