John Mayer is a bad ass

Went to see him last night at PNC. I only saw him one other time, at Live Earth, with a bunch of other artists so he wasn't on all that long then. I was really impressed with him then and was last night too. His show is not in the same league as PJ, don't get me wrong, but he is a great showman (and obviously one of the best guitarist around).

His band is amazing, as what would be expected, he changed a lot of lyrics to Jersey related towns, etc.. which I always enjoy and didn't hesitate to jam for several points throughout the night for extended periods. After seeing a full set, I have to say, he's a bad ass. It doesn't surprise me after seeing him last night that he talked about how what's her face is in bed or had a distasteful joke (I don't even know what the joke was). Again, I'm just saying aside from being an amazing talent, I could see a bit of a dark side to him.

He is really damn good. His live hendrix covers are great. Although alot of his poppy music isn't my style.

    Isn't it John Mayer?

if he wasn't constantly banging hot actresses he'd probably be able to sing the blues as well as he plays it... the poppy shit just gets more and more insulting with every album... such a waste of good blues guitar

he seems like a genuinely fun guy in interviews and TV shows... kindof above the whole heart throb thing... just don't get why he still seems so tied to what the label and soccer moms want him to do

I'd go see him if he did another JMT tour

i agree with kilgore, if he'd leave the poppy shit alone he would be a powerhouse

i saw him play at a festival called 'the blues and roots festival' and he could have ripped the stage up with 100% blues but he instead chose to play 'why georgia' and 'your body is a wonderland' which is a joke of a song

so he is a frustrating figure, so much talent but for some reason he's still trying to appease the brainless pop hoardes

it's fun reading his twitter account, as robyn pecknold of the fleet foxes says "I think John Mayer's Twitter is entertaining, for sure. You get a different opinion on that guy from reading his world-wise Tweets. "

Like Eric Clapton post-Cream, after a while, you just have to give up and realize that the ability to play the chords well is only the first step...

I know John Mayer can play the chords, but I also never expect him to mean it the way someone like Jack White seems to.

Yes to this. Dude could be a legend.
And yes...he is awesome live. I took my favorite lady to see him in march for her birthday, somewhat reluctantly, but his live show is daaaaamn good.
I think if he ever decides he would rather be known as one of the most bad ass guitar players in the world instead of a world-class nookie hound he will do some fantastic things....but his live show with the full band and especially his work with the John Mayer Trio is exceptional. Listen to the JM3 if you haven't already. Good stuff
All I have to do is revel in the everyday....then do it again tomorrow

Probably the most overhyped, overrated guitarist in the history of popular music. He's an average professional guitar player technically and his fake blues bullshit don't fly with me. The fact that people compare him to SRV, Hendrix, or Clapton blows my mind.

I agree he is talented, and seems like a cool guy. But he plays with no emotion, and I just can't get into his style of music.

  • I really like John Mayer's music, I have been a fan for quite a while, but........has anyone else noticed his facial expressions when he sings? Is it just me, or does anyone else find it a little painful to watch him??

I was reading how some of the greats, Clapton, Beck, etc.. are very particular who they will share a stage with and they all want to play with Mayer.

i was really starting to be a fan then that playboy article came out.
    'it's all about the music'

  • Listen to SRV playing Life Without You live, then watch John Mayer play Gravity or one of his other pop ballads....enough said.

Yeah, I think this is exactly the reason. And also I agree with the person who called him a tool, and the other person who called him a douche. Just because he's adept at his instrument doesn't mean he isn't full of shit.
Weird. Why does he make me so cranky?
