Haha few of my mates think all PJ sing are sad songs...to them I present them a list:

    Given To Fly
    Spin The Black Circle
    Oceans
    The Fixer
    Amongst The Waves
    Just Breathe
    Unthought Known
    Supersonic
    In My Tree

Seems to be quite a few "Happy" songs in Backspacer
    anyways I'm sure I've missed a few...

    save you
    love boat captain
    parachutes
    big wave
    gone

Errr, Gone ? Although quite liberating, pretty sad to me in fact .... Same with parachutes, last exit and save you, they don't sound too happy to me ...
I would go for Faithfull and Big Wave though.

I take them as I find them and I find a band that write to impress themselves first. Happy songs come and go, but its the songs that touch your soul that stay a lifetime (same with all artists I think).
Pearl Jam have grow as I have grow older, thus I can relate to their lyrics easily.

I have always liked Tom Waits for ironic humour in songs, but this is PJ here!

    sad? how?
to me this is about a guy who wants to change everything in his life for the better
    positive thought
happy doesn't have to mean "love shack"
google it if you are under 35
the last verse is in reference to what meher baba taught pete townshend
    and that makes me happy

    as far as parachutes
this is a song about love saving someone's life

    last exit
to me is the acceptance of death
and i think we would all be happier if we understood the true meaning of this

    and save you
come on, what your not happy cause he says fuck to much?
it's a song about saving a friend from something terrible

i would love to hear what these songs mean to you and why they do not make you happy

Seems that I have been a bit blunt in my disagreeing, hence your irritated tone. Sorry 'bout that
Since you cared explaining your choice, it's only fair I told you what those mean to me. So here's my take :

    Gone :
To me, a song about someone who feels he doesn't fit in his life anymore. Somehow, he had wanted to believe that by earning money and consuming, his life'd be better. Now he realizes that it's not the case and it all doesn't make sense anymore. So he feels he might just leave it all behind and leave. But to where ?
It's a retreat, he doesn't feel the strength to fight anymore, everything now seems pointless.
He feels nobody can understand / care for him and by leaving the City lights behind, he's leaving everybody behind him as well.
On the spur of the moment, I guess everybody has experienced this feeling that once you've got rid of everything, you'd have it all, hence the "liberating" tone of the song. Down the line, it's only fleeing when no other option seems to be left, and that's quite sad to me actually.

    Parachutes :
actually a "love gone bad" song IMO. He used to feel so much love that he "would have fallen from the sky till" her, YET "parachutes have opened now", and he doesn't feel this way anymore. He wishes they could only still have this love they shared and feel the way they felt.

    Save you :
    I sure don't mind the fucks :-)
IMO it's actually a song about the terrible feeling of trying to save someone you love or deeply care for against their will, when you're witnessing them destroying themself one way or another, and feel powerless because they won't let you and can only resort to begging them to let you help.

    Last Exit :
I always thought it went like : I'll die now and on my own because life's not worth living, and death only may deliver me. That sure was a bit short and there must be more to it !
I must admit I like your insight into this one ;)

Shall we discuss what SOLAT means now ? :D

    I'm sure you do.
I guess it's a good thing that you (along with Better-Man obviously) saw happiness in those songs when I couldn't ....

"I rid myself of worries, and my worries were gone". OK it's a tautology, but a happy one.

I once tried to make the case to my mother that "Down" is a very uplifting song, and she disagreed, saying "You're still referring to yourself as 'dirt'!" :-)
