i thought about this in season one. the only thing i can come up with is the producers make them leave there phones/laptops/whatever at home so they ain't just sitting around on them all day. cause they all talked about bringing phone numbers from home in books and stuff, Tom got mad at jenni one time cause she brought the number of a guy that he told her not to take. and out at the clubs the boys always get girls numbers on little bits of paper.

but yeah, how boring of a show would it be if all they did was sit around the house texting people, updating their status or sending out tweets. so, i think they are not allowed to take their phones with them.

I was almost on a reality TV show once upon a time, I had the contract right in front of my face and it was dozens of pages long. There was text in there that told you that you could not have a cell phone, and had to have minimum contact with the outside world including newspapers, magazines, TV, etc... You're also asked to not speak about the show or anything that happens on it until after it airs, they tell you point blank that they can edit this stuff any way they want. It was very restrictive in lots of different ways, and always transferred any liability from the network onto you. I didn't sign it.

So I believe that they are not allowed to have phones on Jersey Shore, and one centralized phone makes sense because MTV gets to "bug" your calls and show the audience what is being said on the phone in the house. Also, 1 phone for 8 people with egos big enough to want to be filmed 24 / 7 usually creates some drama itself when people fight over it.
