Looking to get a decent entry level D-SLR asap, and I am torn between Canon 1000D and Nikon D3000.

Anyone got any advice?

Also, does the image stabilisation come in handy really? The Nikon standard lens comes with it, but the Canon standard lens does not

Help pleeeease :)

I have a Canon 1000D and a Canon 400D. I had to buy the 1000 after a holiday mishap. I think the 1000 is an excellent camera and I can't see the difference between the 2. As for image stabilisation I suppose you won't know unless you used both types of lens. Reviews I've seen recommend them. They are meant to improve sharpness on long lenses and improve images on short lenses in dim light. Can't say anything about Nikons as I've never used one.

Should be able to buy a Canon kit that includes the image stabilisation lens.

I have the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1K 12.1 MP Digital Camera (Black).

Just google that and the info woll come up.

Switches between manual and auto zoom. With stabilization. Big screen.

    Its all in personal preference.

    further research must be done....

I bought the Canon 1000D (called the Rebel XS in the US) this past December, and recently added another lens (canon 55-250mm with IS)... it has definitely been a great purchase, and I have had a lot of fun with it and have taken some nice pictures.

I went back and forth between the Nikon D3000 before I bought them, and it seems like they are both excellent cameras... some people prefer one over the other, but all of the reviews were about even.

I ended up going with the Canon because a friend of mine has one and I could ask him some questions about settings and stuff and we'd be looking at the same menus.

Good luck, you can't really go wrong... And after looking at all of those old crappy pictures from your old camera, you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner :)

As far as the image stabilization, I'm surprised that the Canon kit lens doesn't have it... over here they do. I'm still a beginner at this, but yeah, it makes a difference to me. Especially on the 250mm lens I have...
