Arizona sheriff: I'll jail immigration protesters

http://www.bnd.com/2010/07/27/1343609/p ... -days.html

By JONATHAN J. COOPER and MICHELLE PRICE - The Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- The sheriff of the most populous county in Arizona says he's "not going to put up with any civil disobedience" when the state's new immigration law takes effect.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio says that if protesters want to block his jail, he'll put them in it.

The Arizona law, which takes effect Thursday, requires officers enforcing other laws to check a person's immigration status if they suspect the person is in the country illegally

Arpaio told ABC's "Good Morning America" he doesn't know "what the big hype is."

He says it's "a crime to be here illegally and everyone should enforce" the law.

this should get interesting.....he better build a bigger jail if he is going to imprison protesters as well....

doesn't he mean that if it is not a lawful protest he will throw them in jail? as long as the protesters are following the rules he won't wrongly imprison anyone.

PHOENIX -- A judge has blocked the most controversial sections of Arizona's new immigration law from taking effect Thursday, handing a major legal victory to opponents of the crackdown.

The law will still take effect Thursday, but without many of the provisions that angered opponents - including sections that required officers to check a person's immigration status while enforcing other laws. The judge also put on hold a part of the law that required immigrants to carry their papers at all times, and made it illegal for undocumented workers to solicit employment in public places.

any protest is a form of civil disobedience and he clearly states that says he's "not going to put up with any civil disobedience"......

The thing is... what is the definition of 'Civil Disobedience'... specifically, what is HIS definition?
I know that rioting and looting are criminal and should result in jailtime and fines in any part of the country... but what if there were 3,000 people blowing those god awful ZuZu Soccer horns in the town square, nonstop from 6:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M. (or whatever the noise curfew is in Maricopa County, AZ.) Is that considered Civil Disobedience... beside the fact that it is annoying as fuck?

Just got back from PHX AZ, spent 17 days there. First time out west, drove from South FL to AZ (2300 miles) and I was stopped at the border (NM-AZ) like everyone else. I thought the border patrol was going to search us but we were ready with ID but they looked at us and asked if we were American citizens, answered yes and let us go on our way.

I'll tell you this much most of the people we talked to or ran into were ALL for this new law. I'm against it all the way, I just hope i won't have any problems cause this is the state and city of PHX I plan to retire in 20 years. Loved the place loved the people all nice and hard working like me. :D

It'll be interesting if this sheriff follows through with amounts to a threat to the protesters. If they are violent then arrest them, however if they are not then he will have come forth with the true definition of civil disobedience.

Peace, it's good to be back sort of. ;)
