So I've just recently gotten into vinyl and I found the "Spin the Black Circle" 45. The unusual thing about it is that is says that "spin the black circle" and "Tremor Christ" are from the album "life". Now I know these were released on Vitalogy and that "vita" means life, but was wondering if anyone had any insight on this. Was the album originally titled "life". Is this a rare 45 that I stumbled on?

All I know is that Vitalogy was originally supposed to be called "Life" but the band changed it to Vitalogy at the last minute. I'm assuming that the single labels were already printed and would have been too expensive to change. All 3 of my vitalogy singles say "life" on them.

by the 3rd single you'd think they would have changed it! anyway every time i see the old title Life I can't help but think that it's a direct response to Kurt's death. But it was obviously cooler going with the whole Vitalogy concept, not to mention the old book cover look, too. same meaning though.

and say all you want Ed, but I'm convinced Immortality is about Kurt as well.

I could swear that I read somewhere that Vitalogy was actually the title of a book, and that PJ and/or the label didn't want to pay royalties to the author of the book for using the title for the singles in addition to the album. So since Vitalogy basically means "life", that is the title they used on the singles.

I'll see if I can find where I read this.

cool, i never heard the "life" before vitalogy story
    i like sound...
  • If you've never read the Vitalogy book the record concept was based from, go on Amazon and buy it for $7 or $8. It is an old (about 110 years) medicine and lifestyle book. It's actually very entertaining to see where the state of things were at the time.

There are some social philosophies laid out which are really interesting, too.

  • I should also mention it is paperback, and fairly thin. It's not a massive, dictionary-sized behemoth.
