So, it rained almost all afternoon
and I had to swim after dinner.
alone, for one buddy,
my son, was at his friend's house
another, my husband, was busy with work.
I was counting as I swam--
one half, one half
one
one and a half, one and a half
two,
two and a half, two and a
I was looking up at the bright cloud up to the right
looking, swimming
then it turned orange
three
three and a half, three and a
a plane was way up there making a slanted line
four
four and a half, four and a
the sky started to glow in the upper right hand side
I watched it and noticed it looked good against the green branches.
but I knew the color would be gone by the time I finished
five
five and a half, five and a
but I thought it was worth looking at anyway, because it was the best part of the sky
for a while, anyway
I like to notice that magic bit of the day
six
six and a half, six and a
I started listening to what I could hear too
without company, what else to do?
there was a clicking frog sound
click, click, click
it sounded like it was coming from someplace close
so, I got out to look in the corner of the patio
no, couldn't see it
walked back into the warm water
I was at about nine by then
nine,
nine and a half, nine and a
the sky still glowed!
orange and dark green branch silhouette
ten
ten and a half, ten and a
what else was in the air?
um...
a motorcycle buzz
doppler effect
the roar of that big street five blocks over
click, click, froggy
twelve,
twelve and a half, twelve and a
there's also that LOUD buzz of the bugs in the trees
almost like the ringing after a loud concert
constant
buzz, buzz, buzz,
background noise
I hear a truck backing up too
beep, beep, beep, beep
fourteen,
fourteen and a half, fourteen and a
the sky is getting darker, there's lavender with the orange now
the clouds are almost powder blue too.
fifteen
fifteen and a half, fifteen and a
ohhh,
only half way there....
it's more boring without company!!
what other sounds are around?
there's that constant hum of Dale Mabry
an occasional plane, yeah,
and the bugs, frogs,
AH!!
the ice cream truck tune:
"Do your ears hang low, do they wobble to and fro,
can you tie 'em in a knot, can you tie 'em in a bow?"
that's such a strange tune to repeat over and over
in high pitched bells
don't they know what the words are to that tune?
don't they know it was from World War One?
It was actually
"Do your balls hang low, do they wobble to and fro,
can you tie 'em in a knot, can you tie 'em in a bow,
can you throw 'em over your shoulder like a continental soldier,
do your balls hang low?"
No, probably not.
In fact, I only know the story because I was told by a history prof. when
he had me play old songs for one of his lectures...
but now I'm at twenty-two anyway
twenty-two and a half, twenty-two...
It's getting dark and I need to stay focused to finish up.
