I just listened to the Gorge boxset this week on my way to work. I actually like the Gorge set better than the Philly boxset. Just great on all levels.

It was a great experience, the heat was a little much but Pearl Jam did not disappoint.

Don't get me wrong, I highly recommend the Philly boxset. It's fantastic. However, if I had to choose I think there is something real special about the Gorge. Everybody makes a big deal that they played Bugs at Philly 4. But don't forget they played Dirty Frank at the Gorge (gotta love that). Also, the first disc at the 05 show with the mellow music dedicated to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers is probably the greatest opening 9 songs in recent memory. And Mike's closing of both shows in 06 with the Star Spangled Banner gives me chills every time.

    Absolutely right.

The Little Wing tag with the WHOLE BAND followed by SSB on George 1 was fantastic.
The Little Wing (song) with YL's tag of SSB was also great.
The "I Won't Back Down" was also good.

The Daughter tag on Gorge night 1 from 2006 was awesome.
"We've got record heat on the east coast, in the midwest, and in Europe, they're boming the shit out of the Middle East, and when you go to bed at night, you try to tell yourself it's ok... but I was thinking that maybe it's not. It's getting harder and harder to say 'it's ok.' So will you help remind me? If I say 'it's ok' will you say 'it's ok?" :D

Mike's solo in Even Flow from that same night. I SWEAR that I also hear a bit of Matt drumming "Why Go" near the end of that solo.

Ed talking about only wearing shorts not because he wanted to re-start grunge fashion, but only because "it's fucking hot!" -- Actually, that was from the other disc.

the '06 shows were pretty good, but not as good as '05 I thought.

Then again I showed up for doors opening to get posters, which meant I was probably developing symptoms of sunstroke by the time pj hit the stage.

I think there was an expectation too, about an opening acoustic set like '05 (as there were no opening bands in '06).

great shows, and we got Dirty Frank!

Not quite as legendary as the '05 show though.. :)

it was more then just bugs it was being apart of closing down one of the most iconic american area's behind msg. the main set was 1 hours and 30 min in itself. everyone makes a big deal bout bugs cause ed fucking nailed it and had the balls to do it infront of 18,000 people.

Please PJ, go back there soon! I want to make my first pilgrimage ...
Houston, Texas... Believe it or not, there are 7 million people here... must be a couple of fans who'd love to see you play.

Dave is good and all, but PJ at the Gorge is probably something else. I missed out on the Gorge shows because I was just getting into Pearl Jam right after they happened, and I wouldn't have had the money since I was a teen in high school then anyway. I've watched the whole second show (July 23rd) on YouTube, and I have to say the band sounds like they are at their best in that show. No lyric fuck ups, no rushing through songs, just hours of incredible rock and roll. I am hoping that PJ plans for some Gorge shows later this year or next year. The Key Arena really doesn't do any justice for a band like Pearl Jam. I would much rather do the 2 hour drive to the Gorge and camp out in the heat and smell bad (due to no showers at the campsite) than see them at the Key again.

I went to see Dave Matthews Band at the Gorge last year, and all I could think about was how amazing it would be to have Pearl Jam there instead. The fact that they were playing songs from Vs. in between sets didn't help at all either.

I missed out on the gorge in '06 because my cousin and I were supposed to fly out there from Philly with his buddy passes but he backed out. I went to 7 shows that tour which made 2006 one of the best years of my life. I met some great people and had the time of my life. I regret not being able to top it all off with a couple of shows at the gorge. At least I got to 3 of the 4 final spectrum shows. If the Phils weren't in the World Series I would have made all 4.

I agree.  I went to the 3 PJ shows in 05/06 and they were amazing.  The 2005 show remains the best PJ show I ever saw.  I would love it if they came back to the gorge.

I'm also at a 10 year Gorge drought.  I saw Soundgarden/QoTSA there in 2011, and Tom Petty in 2014.   Could use a reason to go back :)

I went to all 3 as well as a teenager. The ‘05 show is the second best show for me, behind MSG 2 2010. I really wish I got to experience it as a 35 year old instead of 16. Regardless, I remember that show so clearly. The reaction for HTI was so awesome…and then not a single slow song for 3 more hours.

I wonder why they played it 3 times over 2 years, then never went back.

Maybe it's the weather? The weather for the 2005 show was perfect.  Sunny.  Not too hot or cold.   The 2006 shows were f'ing hot.  Maybe do the shows late spring or September to not hit the summer desert heat in the future?   The gorge is tough in July/August sun. It has almost no shade :(

May, June, September  generally will have near perfect conditions on average.  July is not the greatest month out there after mid august things trend back up.  I have only been out there end of May a couple of times for the former Sasquatch festival.  Weather was perfect.
