2nd chance to an album or artist

What album or artist you first hated but then after a while you gave them a second chance and now you like it?

I fell in love with STP first album at the first spin, but after core every single album i had to listen to it twice to really grasp the music.

Also I didn't like NIN, i only listened a single song and it didn't captured me, so for a couple of months i didn't care about NIN, but then after the recommendation of a friend i gave it a first (complete)spin to Pretty Hate Machine i was blown away...

What about you?

    Pearl Jam.

Back in '91 or '92 when I heard Alive, the song sounded too "pretty" on the radio. I believe it was the way the whole album is over-produced and washy in sound. When I saw the Alive and Evenflow videos though, that's when I think I actually began liking them. Then I picked up Ten and was able to see thru the over-production and into the actual songs. I'm glad they re-released Ten too.
ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you. :)

U2, in the 80's I hated them but then I realized it was great. They've become almost a caricature at this point but they had a 3-4 album run in the 80's that is amazing.

Also REM I hated them at the same time but as I matured I opened to other styles of music.

My Morning Jacket took some time

I've done this with quite a few artists/albums through the years.
Most notably probably would be The Boss. I knew the radio songs but never really gave him a chance for whatever reason I don't even know now. It all changed with all the promo leading up to The Rising. I bought that album, listened to it for six months straight and became a huge fan.

Not really the same thing, but for years I ignored the Drive-by Truckers based on my perception that were a gimmicky type band and I guess that came from their cartoonish album covers and maybe even the band name itself. Boy, I felt like a total jackass when I finally listened because I knew immediately that i had deprived myself of such great music for so long and for no reason
All I have to do is revel in the everyday....then do it again tomorrow

This happens to me a lot. I have learned that I need to give something several listens before I decide I hate it. The biggest for me I guess would be the Rolling Stones. I was into them and then one day I pulled out Sticky Fingers, gave it another listen and have loved the band ever since. I guess if there was ever an album to convince you to love an artist Sticky Fingers would be the one!

Seether is the only group that comes to mind, but I know there are a ton more. I saw them live years ago, thought they sounded horrible- walked out of their show. Then a few years later, I heard on the radio that they covered a PJ song on their new live album, so I decided to give them another chance. I wouldn't say I'm a huge fan of them now, but I enjoy their music and will check them out if they come to town

I don't even know how Jack White's voice sounds, I don't listen to the radio so I'm very disconnected... but if you joined their fan club... well i should give it a try

I feel the same way sometimes. Probably the singe thing that I bought myself int he past year that I cherish more than anything else is my CD player in my truck that has a connection for my ipod. I can't stand the crap on the radio and now I can listen to whatever I want. The only downfall is that I am clueless when it comes to new music. If it wasn't for this forum, I would be really lost.

''too pretty" - that was pretty much my exact reaction when this girl I had a crush on played me some of ten on her walkman, all the way back then! Now look where it's gotten us!! :o Like you, I quickly learned to see through the overproduction.

Agree with a lot of the posts - some of the artists you don't really dig at first can seem to have a much longer shelf-life.

For me the biggest 'slow-burner' has gotta be Dylan - started with Desire, had that in my top 20 for a number of years, went back to blonde on blonde, a few more years in my top 20 (with desire), then Blood on the tracks added for a few years, then bringing it all back home....etc etc . one day I wake up and go 'fucking hell - Bob Dylan is pretty much my favourite artist these days! (other than PJ obviously).

Next thing I know I'm into all his post-Oh Mercy stuff - whole process, about 20 years!!

Two that come to mind for me are Tool and The Prodigy. I remember the Sober video being constantly played on MTV and I just never could get into their music at the time. Then I bought Lateralus and that changed everything! My husband bought The Fat of The Land album from Prodigy and I hated it after the first few listens and then years later I gave it another chance and now I am a huge fan of theirs.

It took me a few tries before I started enjoying Radiohead. I don't know what it was about them, Yorke's voice maybe? But I decided to pick up a copy of "In Rainbows" and within the first listen of this album I was hooked. Got right into all of their material after that but again it took me several times to develop a liking for them.

Mine would be Sonic Youth. When I first got interested in the history of grunge bands and their influences, it seemed that Sonic Youth was mentioned a lot. So, naturally I decided to give them a listen because if they influenced artists that I liked there had to be something to them. Or so I thought. The first couple of listens and I thought it was utter crap. It was a couple of years before I gave them another shot, and only gave them that shot because I really enjoyed their set when they opened for PJ in 2000. After that show I guess it all just clicked for me and now I love their music. It's weird how things like happen sometimes.
  • With Pearl Jam it wasn't that I didn't like them, it was just I never took the opportunity to go beyond what I'd heard. I listened to Jeremy, thought it was good, but then never bothered listening to 10. It took me aeons to finally get into them fully (like, until the Avocado album!) and I don't understand why I did it, but there you go.

I didn't like Arcade Fire's 'Funeral' when I first heard it. However, I gave it another shot and love it now, even though I think Neon Bible is the better album.

The National was another where the penny didn't drop the first time, but now I think they're glorious! :D
It's gonna be a glorious day...

    'glorious' good word!

I think radiohead as a band have a lot of similarities to pearl jam (not the sound) - they are hardass often uncompromising 'artists' who are also have a mainstream appeal - have a lot of principled political stances, and fuck with expectations a lot. Also, with a massive back catalogue, you can pick them up at any one point of time and then go back thru the catalogue.

So it is with many of the great 60s / 70s artists - it doesn't matter when you discover them - 25 years ago or yesterday - when you discover the doors you discover the doors!

That cannot be said for a lot of today's artists unfortunately - since everything is going so goddamn quick. Still, it's an exciting time with lots of live shows and new bands being able to broadcast themselves on a much lower budget than during the 'classic album' days, and a lot of people pushing the boundaries.

I also didn't get into radiohead first time I heard them, but come OK computer I was hooked. Yorke's voice is kinda 'thin', so it's interesting that a lot of PJ fans are also into them - regardless of the electronics or experimental parts. In many ways I think radiohead as a band 'feel' a lot closer to PJ than SG, AIC, or any of the current metal rubbish which I have zero interest in (sorry!!)

Just watching their 'blue blood blues' - sounds pretty good!! I watched the nme vid - Jack White looks about 15! I swear he looked older when he was starting out (maybe it's just me).

I've never been that impressed with his work - especially considering how rated he is. I've loved Brendan Benson since I got into 'the alternative to love' album - he's got a great ear for a melody - I like his raconteurs stuff more than JW's I think (haven't heard all that much)

Have a crack at a few Brendan Benson solo from that album:

Very eloquent! I'm quite a fan of tragic songs with a sweet disguise these days. Helps keep me from sinking back into the pit! Been listening to a lot of Elvis Costello recently, and he is very good at plumbing the depths of despair, but making sure it is completely 'catchy' at the same time!!

    Strangely enough, Pearl Jam

I was a SR in high school and my buddy abused TEN to the point no one would ride with him...
Too polished and not hard enough for my liking at the time (was into Zeppelin, Who, Slayer, Geto Boys, NWA)...

Vegas 93 Aladdin show & Vs. changed everything and I've been a lunatic fan ever since :D

Oasis. I borrowed a copy of Definitely Maybe from a high school teacher, didn't care too much for it at first.
Now I have every Oasis album, all of the B-sides, etc. Just goes to show that you can't dismiss a band after the first listen....
