First listen to this in years - what really struck me is how good it sounds. I listen to bootlegs mostly these days, and find when I got back to the albums they sound a bit flat, but it still sounds great, capturing the live energy. Anone agree, or am I talking BS?

It seems that BoB is really good at getting that nice live feel to the recording.

You know, I dont think I ever realised at the time how good Vitalogy is - It was percieved as a bit of a backlach against the commercial success of the first two, but has some of their post beautiful songs, mixed in with the punkier stuff which still sounds really fresh today.

I find you pick up the subtleties that get lost in the live mix. And lyrics that have been changed over the years, that you forget werent the originals..

Yes. Boots in the car, albums at home, with headphones. Lots of songs are neglected live, and as you said, subtleties get lost on the concert.
  • My favorite album of all time - in any genre.

Raw, emotional...a snapshot of when it was released, yet just as relevant today.

I rarely listen to boots. Only on long road trips. Otherwise, albums in the car, and random 1500+ song playlist at home (which happens to have about 15-20% live PJ).

    Anyway, Vitalogy: Best. Album. Ever.

OK, nm... that's Yield... but Vitalogy is my favorite, even if I think Yield is the best... if that makes sense.

Holy shit, gets me pumped every time. Ironically, it's the album that made me throw away PJ for 4 years (Yield brought me back).

  • can someone explain to me how people can say "(this album) is my favourite, but (this album) is their best". I've heard this several times in different threads over the past few days. If it's their best album, wouldn't it be your favourite?

Hmmm... I think I know what people are talking about when they say that, but it's one of those things that is difficult to put into words. To me, I think it means that the structure, flow, editing, meaning (all the technical stuff) is better in Yield, but Vitalogy with all its messiness, strangeness, and anger/sadness appeals to some on a different level that they enjoy more. Anyone please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong!

To me it's kind of like saying that an Oscar award-winning moving like The Wrestler is technically a better movie than, say, The Hangover, but I enjoy The Hangover more.

I usually have different songs for "Best" and "Favorite." My Favorite song is Immortality. The Best is probably Black or Rearviewmirror. The Favorite is the song or album with the most emotional connection, whereas the Best is understood to be a masterpiece.

Vitalogy could still never be my favorite because they ruined the perfect ending of Immortality with 5 or 6 minutes of gibberish.

I think this is their White Album. So many feelings and genres in this: rock, punk, slow stuff, experimental stuff. Love this album.

Actually, the filler is part of the reason why I like the album so much!

I agree that VS and Vitalogy are the two albums that are far superior on the album over the live performances post '95.
ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you. :)

I probably said it a thousand time but to this day, still my all-time favorite album. Everything from it; the songs, the packaging, the myth around the band at that time... EVERYTHING IS GREAT ABOUT VITALOGY!!!!
