How worried should I be...

...that a $9.00 charge just showed up in my checking account, made to the Split Diamond Ranch in Webster, North Dakota, which is a long way from Boston.
I don't know what this charge is for.
I Googled and found a Split Diamond Ranch in Montana. They sell Black Angus bulls.
I don't eat meat. My yard is quite small. I don't think the dogs would like to share it with a bull. I'm quite sure Mr. Unlost Dogs doesn't want a bull. I understand they are quite smelly.
The bank can't trace it yet because it's processing and probably won't post until tomorrow. At that time they can identify whoever is submitting it. But they helpfully warned me that sometimes, thieves will first post a small amount to see if the card works, then they'll follow the $9 swipe with a $900 swipe.
I've been advised to sit tight until it posts and then figure out if I can recognize it. If I don't, submit a form to get the $9 back, and then get a new card.
So I'm worried. But how worried should I be?

As long as you've alerted your bank to it, you should be fine.0

Luckily it's only $9, but you should definitely take some action against it to prevent anything to happen with greater impact.
Good luck, I've dealt with this a couple of times...it's pretty annoying.7/2/06 - Denver, CO

I've dealt with that a few times too. Good that you contact the bank...close the account, get a new card and alert all 3 of the credit bureaus and get a lock put on your account (I think if you alert one, they will alert the other 2). My bank was great in reimbursing my money right away. My brother's bank made him wait a ridiculous amount of time and it impacted payments he had sent for other bills. That was a mess. Hope you don't find a baby bull waiting in your mailbox!

What can you get for $9 at a ranch? :?

This happened to me ... I had three transactions of £1.69 then another 8 of far bigger amounts over the period of 24 hours ... I hadn't checked my account in a few days.In total a website got £1,800 out of my account ... most of it on an overdraft facility ...my bank hadn't noticed until I contacted them.
It is good that your bank are on track with it ... they should be able to sort it out and cancel your card.Good luck“There should be a place where only the things you want to happen, happen”0 -
you notified your bank.
You'll only be liable for $50.00
just hope they're small-time crooks and only after your money not your ID0 -
Bugger! Did the right thing alerting the bank.
A friend of mine had someone charge flights on her card, but as soon as she contacted the bank they stopped the payment so she wasn't liable.
Hope all is well.<a href="http://s952.photobucket.com/albums/ae8/catkinson_2009/?action=view¤t=domo.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i952.photobucket.com/albums/ae8/catkinson_2009/domo.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>0 -
They may be testing the account with a low number to see if it's active. Then they might try for a huge amount.ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you.

Thanks everyone _ I have a bad feeling about this.

I set up the account to email me immediately when the card is swiped remotely. I've been happy with that, and impressed with the bank's security. When I was at the PJ show in Boston, I went a little crazy with the merchandise and as I was heading to my seat I got an emails saying they were putting a hold on my card because of unusual activity (the merch) and to please contact them right away. They sorted it out within minutes, after assuring it was me, and yes, I was buying all that stuff.
This, however, seems very weird (even for me).
And BD: For $9 at this ranch I'm guessing you could buy a hoof. Now that I think of it _ don't you frequently grill burgers poolside on the weekends? :problem:15 years of sharks 06/30/08 (MA), 05/17/10 (Boston), 09/03/11 (Alpine Valley), 09/04/11 (Alpine Valley), 09/30/12 (Missoula), 07/19/13 (Wrigley), 10/15/13 (Worcester), 10/16/13 (Worcester), 10/25/13 (Hartford), 12/4/13 (Vancouver), 12/6/13 (Seattle), 6/26/14 (Berlin), 6/28/14 (Stockholm), 10/16/14 (Detroit)0 -
The word 'Diamond' may definately be a clue. Did I read that somewhere else?<a href="http://s952.photobucket.com/albums/ae8/catkinson_2009/?action=view¤t=domo.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i952.photobucket.com/albums/ae8/catkinson_2009/domo.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>0

Excellent point. Perhaps I shouldn't be looking hard at Mr. Black Diamond...or, perhaps he has an accomplice who is a noted bass player.15 years of sharks 06/30/08 (MA), 05/17/10 (Boston), 09/03/11 (Alpine Valley), 09/04/11 (Alpine Valley), 09/30/12 (Missoula), 07/19/13 (Wrigley), 10/15/13 (Worcester), 10/16/13 (Worcester), 10/25/13 (Hartford), 12/4/13 (Vancouver), 12/6/13 (Seattle), 6/26/14 (Berlin), 6/28/14 (Stockholm), 10/16/14 (Detroit)0 -

I will find out if any of the Black Angus bulls could rap out a nice drum solo for you, Claire.15 years of sharks 06/30/08 (MA), 05/17/10 (Boston), 09/03/11 (Alpine Valley), 09/04/11 (Alpine Valley), 09/30/12 (Missoula), 07/19/13 (Wrigley), 10/15/13 (Worcester), 10/16/13 (Worcester), 10/25/13 (Hartford), 12/4/13 (Vancouver), 12/6/13 (Seattle), 6/26/14 (Berlin), 6/28/14 (Stockholm), 10/16/14 (Detroit)0

Thank you. They must have rhythm, a bull is no good without rhythm.<a href="http://s952.photobucket.com/albums/ae8/catkinson_2009/?action=view¤t=domo.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i952.photobucket.com/albums/ae8/catkinson_2009/domo.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>0
