So basically Pearl Jam album with songs solely written by Mike - I'll be down with that!

Yeah, and if not Ed... at least another person who excels at singing. I can understand it if they need a break from each other or something, but some people just weren't meant to sing. I'm one of them. ;)

One of the major reasons we all love Pearl Jam is Vedder's vocals. They are amazing. Another reason we love Pearl Jam is McCready's licks. They are amazing too. Ed can't deliver Mike's guitar work any more than Mike can deliver Ed's vocals. That's part of what makes Pearl Jam awesome. I know there are a handful of people out there who like Bayleaf, Tone, etc. But I think the majority of us, if we're honest with ourselves, know that there is something majorly missing when these guys churn out a solo project. I sort of equate it a sports game. Normally every one of these guys plays an important position that they excel at. In that role and as part of the overall team they function magnificently. When they try to play multiple or all the positions on the field, their weaknesses come to the forefront. Some of the guys can play multiple positions on the field a little better than others, but asking Mike to sing lead vocals is asking Mike to play a position he isn't meant to and doesn't excel at. So I am hoping that if he chooses to do a solo album that he acknowledges this and keeps it instrumental or says, "Hey Ed, I wrote a bunch of lyrics and songs and I'd be honored to have you sing them on my album." I truly believe Ed would feel honored to do so for his friend and the end result could be something they'd both be proud of and not thinking, "It's pretty good, but the vocals..."

    Very well put!

I agree with most of the comments about Mike singing. If Mike was doing all of the singing, I would probably not be interested. I love Mike's guitar work, and I even like most of the lyrics he writes,(Last Soldier in particular) but I just don't care for his singing. I would love for him to do something like the new Slash album. An album full of guest singers. Since Slash wrote the music, it really highlights the guitar work, but it has a really good variety of singers, including singers you wouldn't normally equate with rock songs ie: Fergie, and the guy from Maroon 5. I really like the album, of course I am a huge fan of GNR and I think Slash is a phenomenal guitarist. I really would love to see McCready do something like this. Maybe have Ed sing on just one of the songs...

Bayleaf is a great album, although I haven't listened to it for awhile now. Tone is AMAZING! That one rarely leaves me car. Even when it does, it isn't long before it's back in again. I am looking forward to Mike's album. I have my doubts that it will be as good as the other two or Into the Wild, but I could be way off.

mikes not a song writer. his lyrics are... bad.

if he were to make an instrumental album (ie explosions in the sky), i would buy that.

You think the lyrics from Inside Job are bad? :lolno:

    Ooootay then.

i think inside job is one of the worst written songs in the pearl jam catalogue

I wouldn't say bad and definitely not worst, but they tend to be simple. Inside Job has a "deep" theme, but the lyrics aren't really that complex. Turning Mist is also good, but not great - I suppose it's all relative, but I wouldn't want an entire album like that. McCready is a great guitarist and offers a lot to the band.... just don't think he has the lyrics/vocals for a solo album.

i would love a mike solo album to sit with the jeff and stone albums..so they can all be on the shelf together and never be played.

come on who plays bayleaf or tone

Are you kidding! I can't get enough of Bayleaf. It is a great album. A Mike solo album will be neat, but Stone needs to get another solo album out ASAP!
  • I hope his solo album would be a guitar album that kicks you in the ass and not a singer song writer vibe.
I would love for mike to play with G3.

I'm going to say that Mike has already done a solo album. It was called Above and was put out under the band name Mad Season.

Seriously, the instrumentals on that album are sick! Sure Barrett Martin's percussion is killer, as are Staley's vocals and Saunder's bass lines, but I think it's quite obvious who the driving force behind this was.
