Well, looks like you're gonna be even more deadlocked than before, unless the silly filibuster stuff is thrown out the window. It still amazes me that you have institutionalized that a 40% minority in a 2-party system can block any and all legislation if it wants to.

during these hard time it's so hard to tell which way things will go with Dems or repubs to tell you the truth the possible change of the guard worries me..what do the repubs have in mind ? on the other hand it will be nice to see palosi replaced, that woman worries me too, so I guess all we can do is hope for the best.

    Round and round we go.

Republicans will get power back and piss everybody off and then the people will vote in another democrat.

    Where is the head-spinning smilie?

Well, when a 59% majority dem senate have this much trouble implementing the laws it wants, a theoretical 51% rep majority isn't gonna get anything their way either. That filibuster bullshit just ensures that no real steps will be made on anything, not even if the majority party, as elected by the voters, wants it. And you can rely on the dems returning the filibuster favour whenever reps want to field pet projects, or try to do anything major.

So, in the interest of democracy, they should at least change the filibuster rules. At the very least back to where if a filibuster were tot ake place, the person calling it damn well had to stand there every day blocking the podium and not just "anyone calling filibuster? [raises hand] OK, moving on to other business...". Or actually just extend the powers of the speaker to end discussion when it is obviously exhausted, or have a time limit per speaker on an issue.

In a democracy, the majority party gets to decide what laws and policies are. Otherwise, what is the point of voting? So now that dems have the congress, senate and president, well they SHOULD get to decide what happens. Just as if the reps take these back, they should get to decide. That's democracy. It shouldn't be sidelined by an old-fashioned quirk of the rules that allows anyone to speak as long as he damn well pleases in the congress.
