Looks like the new cap is in place and appears to be working on the live feed.

Is this a sign the world will not end and clean up efforts will finally start to slowly catch up?

hopefully this works... the relief wells can't be too far away, right?

Sadly, it will take years to clean up, and the region will never be the same.

It's just comforting to know, if this is working, there is hope. Years yes, but just think how bad it would be if this went on for months more.. Although still a catastrophy, the feeling of hopelessness will diminish.

i hope the anger doesn't, if anything this should prove to our representatives we need a real push towards alternatives and stop dumping so much into things like oil, gas, coal, nuclear....we could easily reduce our dependency with cleaner methods but....the past 2 administrations aren't having secret, closed door meetings with the solar power industry and lobby, just ones like oil and coal. it's nice to make pretty speeches and give timeframes which start after elections and even after 2 terms but something needs to be done NOW. there's no reason instead of giving tens of billions to multi-billion $ companies that pay no us taxes they could put solar panels in regions of california, nevada, arizona....where no one lives and wind farms in places like wyoming or kansas where little to no one lives and turbines that are powered by the tides....that would cut down a lot of pollution and dependence but instead the government protects the status quo. they should be investing in the future instead of finding ways to give it to their friends and campaign investors
    don't compete; coexist

what are you but my reflection? who am i to judge or strike you down?

what tunnel does one speak of? ... the reality is that unless you are directly affected by this gulf spill - the anger has dissipated as expected and usual ... this oil spill was as much an accident as a drunk driver killing someone ... and there have been zero consequences that are in line with this crime ... the people are as apathetic as usual and it's no wonder the financial crisis of which we are still suffering the impacts of can happen ... i'm sorry ... but we failed yet again as a people and as a democracy ... the corporations win again ...

haha ... yeah, i'm actually an optimistic guy in general but i think my practical and realist side also takes over especially in stuff like this ... i just really can't be happy about these small victories when the bigger game has been lost ... i honestly believe people want to find anything to feel good about this story so they can stop feeling bad about it ... no one likes to feel bad especially if it should warrant action ... so, instead of feeling angry and doing something about it - we take joy in this little bit of news and move on ...

it ain't over till the fat lady sings..I'll bet there will be plenty of repercussions $$$$$$ in long term clean up and new law for backup and safety standards, which makes me wonder is that why bp has entertained offers to sell ? when you buy a company you assume all debts and responsibility's right ?

Hey Pepe, here are 2 links that shed a little light (no pun intended):

Apparently the govt is giving these companies tons of $$$ through the Dept of Energy to get solar power rolling. I guess that's good. :P

Riffing on a Churchill quote, This isn't the beginning of the end, but hopefully it is the end of the beginning.
All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.
  • With a comment like, "this is a daily science experiment" sounds like they had all the back-up plans firmly in place. I bet they didn't even have a computer simulation for any problem beyond running out of food and smokes for the people on the platform.

The poison from the poison stream caught up to you ELEVEN years ago and you floated out of here. Sept. 14, 08
