I really like what Matt Cameron brings to the drum Kit, but yet again since my first show in 1998 I have only been blessed with watching him patrol the drums. But the way Jackl Irons played was different and very much enjoyable. If pearl jam only had the need for 2 drummers then that would be great. But I'm gonna go with Matt on this one.

This is tough because PJ has undergone so many musical "personalities", from the polished sound of Ten to the funky, tight, rough and raw VS and Vitalogy, to the eclectic and sometimes tribal rock on No Code and Yield, to the later albums Binaural thru Backspacer.

But imo as a drummer since '84 and a fan of PJ since '92, Dave Abbruzzese pulled out the best live sound for the early three album songs - hands-down. I collected many bootlegs during this time, and they were ALL completely incendiary on every performance. His mixture of drumming absolutely set the band on fire, particularly the following songs: Even Flow, Why Go, Garden, Deep, State Of Love & Trust, Once, Alive, Jeremy, Go, Animal, Daughter, Glorifed G, Dissident, WMA, Blood, RVM, Rats, Elderly Woman, Leash, Last Exit, Spin The Black Circle, NFY, Corduroy, Betterman and Immortality. The songs that I didn't list above from the three albums sound well enough with the other drummers. It's a shame that certain band members couldn't work out differences.

When Jack came into the picture and I picked up the first bootleg, and frankly I was very disappointed. It seemed he didn't know the songs well, and didn't have nearly the chops that Dave had. After hearing No Code, and adjusting my expectation of PJ's future releases, I've grown to love No Code. It was a gigantic change in direction for the band. Jack on Jack's songs sounds good. I've said before that Jack's way of drumming is almost "bohemian" in style. Songs like Who You Are and Given To Fly are very particular to his unique playing style. While I think his way of playing the early material was absolutely no comparison to Dave's playing, the material that was written around Jack's abilities is some of the most heart-felt music.

When Matt was announced to replace Jack, I was thrilled at the news. I was watching the performance of Wishlist on Letterman at work late one night, and loved his odd-timing of cymbals on that song. I thought it would be a return to the way Dave used to play. Though when I got some bootlegs from him playing, the way he played was completely different from what I enjoyed. The funk was gone. Most of the cymbal work was gone. The odd timing was thrown in everywhere, and tom-fills felt shoe-horned in to places it didn't need to be. It was an even further departure from where Jack had brought things, and Matt completely changed up the timing of most of the early material he performed. Songs like Porch and SOLAT which used to be funky and "wet" on the cymbals became "dry" and straight forward. A number of other songs followed suit. But after hearing the songs that PJ built around Matt's abilities, I grew to like the new material he was writing with them. Backspacer has some of the most challenging drumming, very much to Matt's credit. While I significantly miss what PJ used to be and used to sound like, I very much enjoy the new material they write and perform.

My preference is very much for Dave playing the first three albums live, and then after that the following drummers have a strong place in my heart on their own material. :)

(With an honorable nod to Krusen, but I think Dave sounds better on Krusen's material)

...and dear god, please play a 20th Anniversary show with all the drummers playing all of their own material! :D

Jack was listed on Vitalogy as "Drums" and Dave was listed as "Drumkit". A not so subtle slam at him and his technical playing. I think Jack played just on Foxymophandlemama on Vitalogy though, and if memory serves, I think the band recorded Satan's Bed with the drum-tech, but the rest of the album is all Dave.

    3. Tied between Matt and Jack (Matt is probably better technically but I will always love Jack for No Code)

Though as a fan since 2007 Matt is the only one I've seen live.

Yeah I know Dave drums on Vitalogy. I'm talking about the live shows from the Vitalogy and No Code tours that Jack played on.

And why does Stone look like Eminem??

Actually, that picture freaking rules....and Jack is definitely my #1. But Matt deserves a large thank you from every PJ fan by being a freaking machine who has held this band together for the last decade.

    cheers

  • Man, this is a tough question. I like them all...but here is my shot...

    1a) Matt
    1b) Dave A.
    3) Jack
    4) Dave K.

I give the nod to Matt for more than just his superior skills on the skins. He is extremely talented as a song writer...You Are, The Fixer, In the Moonlight...just to name a few.

That being said, I do prefer Matt from 1998 to 2000. Not to say his more recent work isn't stellar. I just prefer the sound of his kit on the 2000 boots the best.

Now for one minute, imagine that their body of work remained the same(all the same albums and songs), but Dave A. was the drummer. How much different would the songs be, even though they are the same songs. I can't help but wonder how awesome would a song like, say, Hail Hail or Johny Guitar or Unemployable be? DONT GET ME WRONG....I love the music they have created. Just an interesting thought as I hold Dave right up there with Matt.
