What Pearl Jam does for me.

It's hard to explain to outsiders, and those who try to understand why we are so passionate about this band. But something happens to me when I'm listening to PJ's albums... I can't explain even if I tried... It can drive you to tears depending on your mood at a given time, it will inspire you if you're feeling lost, and it empowers you and makes you a better person if you let it. It surrounds me and makes me feel less alone when dealing with certain situations. I find it to be a privelage to enjoy something so much that can take you to another world. Through PJ's music I feel as if everything is right in the world as long as I'm feeling the music and I'm living in the moment.

The live aspect of seeing this band is nothing short of an out of body experience, how fortunate are we that for three hours we can all sing, dance, and be moved as one. At a single moment and a single time 18,000 people can be in another world, wrapped up in the same happiness and enjoyment for the sheer passion that music does for them.

I feel sorry for those who have not been touched by this band one way or the other. Listening to Pearl Jam is truly a joy to me.

For 3 hours I'm free of everything... And that's priceless.

  • Pearl Jam is special because they are "real".

The connection PJ have with fans is something that not many bands can claim they have.

It doesn't matter what personal experiences any of us have had. Some people have been struck with tragedy while others live happily and at peace with themselves. But it doesn't matter- when it comes to a Pearl Jam show. The minds of all the thousands of people unite because of one thing - the music that Pearl Jam makes. Sure some people can identify with certain lyrics that others can't, but regardless of personal affairs, the music is what matters the most.
  • they made me the person/adult i am. i've grown up listening to their music and their views on the way the world spins. even if you don't believe in some of their activism at least your made aware that stuff does need to be done in order to be free and happy in the world/life we live in.

what i'm trying to say is...they have different means apart from music that can open up your mind to whats goin on around you or even deep inside of you.

the other thing they do for me is to help empty my bank account!! :D

    Yea Pearl Jam move us.
Everytime we listen to them, every single day, year after year........

Without PJ I reckon I wouldn't be as strong as I am, and so therefore I overcome adversaries easily. :geek:

I agree 1000% with everything you posted!!
It is really hard when hardly any of my friends really understand just how much the band means to me- to any other person it seems like some weird obsession, but to all of us PJ has really affected our lives in the best possible way!

The music is something else- when a song can help you understand your own self a little better, that's pretty powerful.
And live- it agreed: there is NOTHING quite like seeing Pearl Jam live!

This post really is right on....In good times, PJ music makes me feel amazing!

I have been going through the worst period in my life for the past 3 months+ and I have been listening to a ton of PJ & EV solo. Over this 3 month period, my realization as to how great PJ is has risen to a whole new level. PJ & EV solo on my IPOD has kept me moving forward.

    Thanks Pearl Jam!!!
  • Everything about PJ makes me smile. I started listening to them (with Ten, courtesy of BMG Music Club) when I was a freshman in high school. 7 years later I still have a bootleg in my car stereo about 80-95% of the time. I listen to a WIDE variety of music and when I find a new band (like Wilco, Black Keys, Flaming Lips etc) I love all of their music but my love for Pearl Jam stays consistent. Wilco is a close second, it use to be AiC but I've grown out of my angst years (even though I still love me some AiC, sometimes it's just too depressing).

The way Pearl Jam handles their touring, fans and lives has taught me so much in my own life. I use to be self centered and close minded before I really delved into the things that Ed and the band try to teach and preach. The band made me mature QUICKLY as I started experiencing different things other than the usual high schoolers role of party animal. I started studying many subjects and bands because of Pearl Jam. The band has forever changed my perceptions on life and how things should be in the world. The band has given me confidence in myself and taught me how to be a fulfilled human being. There is something so mind blowingly (I know, not a word) special about the band and their music.

This past year I took my buddy to the Buffalo show as an wedding present, he was getting married five days after the show. We were both stoked but he had only really listened to Ten and Vs. but knew a handful of their other hits (Betterman etc). After the Buffalo show he said it was the best and most thrilling concert he's ever been too, and being my first PJ concert, I had to agree. He couldn't believe how the whole section we were in was like one big family and he was amazed when everyone belted out Betterman in unison and ended up giving Eddie chills. My favorite quote from him after the night was finished, "That was life changing,".

All in all Pearl Jam has helped me realize that a better world can only come from you and what you do to help. I will forever donate to charity and I plan on joining the AmeriCorps to help with the oil spill, or possibly some other line of conservation volunteer work. Pearl Jam has helped me realize wealth should never be on the top of your wishlist. They've helped me appreciate my own loved ones that much more. So much about this band makes my heart sing.

Ask not what your Pearl Jam can do for you, but what you can do for your Pearl Jam.

They take me to my utopia world where everyone lives in peace and loves each other. Pearl Jam was the missing piece to my utopia world.

They, to me, seem to carry on John Lennon's message of peace and love and want to change the world any way they can.

Also, how many bands do you know that can kick ass for 20+ years consistently? Not many.

With their live performances, they don't need stage settings, pyrotechnics, and other shit that makes people go, "Oooh" and "Ahhh" to seem like they need it to make the shows better. All six of them with a stage and great crowd energy makes each show great.

I have a hard time listening else but Pearl Jam. How do you do it? I feel like I've found the perfect meal, and anything else tastes less than perfect. Maybe you can PM me some bands that you like (beyond the usual grunge fodder). I feel like I want to move my tastes beyond PJ, but ever since I've been hooked, they have been the only band I've listened to.

I have had some wonderful experiences with this band. I think growing up, I could definately relate to some of the music. Which in a way, helped to see things from a different perspective. Sometimes gaining hope, sometimes just venting anger or what not. After being a big fan for around 6 years, I became a born again christian for maybe around 9 months or so about four years ago. That was probably the biggest waste of time of my life but, I remember that about the same time when I was starting to realize the path that I had went down was possibly a mistake, the announcement for Avocado came out. I went to go buy it at an indie record store in the town I lived in. I had also let my membership lapse during that period as well. But anyways, I listened to S/T for the first time, and then i remember thinking to myself "What a gigantic waste of time", I tried to be someone I wasn't" Life Wasted, Comatose, Marker, Inside Job, and Comeback all kind of spoke to me. Anyways, I think the point I am trying to make is that Pearl Jam reminds me of who I am, and where I came from. Plus not to mention, KC 2010 was my first concert in two years, which when the first notes to Of the Girl where played, I just got chills. Pretty awesome....

I have been getting into some other music lately, but I always return to Pearl Jam, no matter who else I listen to. I've spent a lot of money on them, travelled interstate to see them, something I wouldn't do to see any other band. When I'm bored, I go onto this board and catch up with all the PJ news, since Australia is far away from any PJ action. I got my kids onto them as well. They are the ultimate band as far as I'm concerned.

Pearl Jam is like home, a comfortable place to be me, happy, content, understood.
Lost in their music I find my memories of the last 20 years.
I find thoughts and words shared here with friends, fellow PJ fans each day.
And I find future fun down the road, discovering new music yet to come, revelations from Eddie's lyrics of life
and memories to be made with a tour yet to be.
It's not so much what Pearl Jam does for me, it's
    Pearl Jam defines me :D

    How they make the waiting for something a celebrated anxiety;

    waiting for tickets
    waiting for the concert
waiting for the work day to end on the day of the concert
waiting for the album to be released

The waiting is something to look forward to, as it means there is something to look forward to. It's tangible like a coin.
