do a little online research about what acidic foods do to your body and it's not just tomatoes or o.j. they cause inflammation (like to your joints.) so does chocolate :( I was becoming a junk food addict in my windowless office, suffering from chronic pain. yesterday i took some canned yams (1 serving) for a snack at work. sure it has sugar but i'm trying to wean myself off, at least it was not a candy bar...

I listen to an all news station. recently they quoted a doctor who said there is no scientific evidence about a new shoe women have been wearing to tone their legs (I think victoria secret sells them). he said they cause injury like fractures and some people are walking incorrectly. he said "try eating 1 less bagel and walk 30 minutes daily instead to tone up." however i know a chiropractor who said his patients got positive results from the shoes (thongs?)

i have a family member who has been very sedentary for the past 30 yrs and she knows how to cook healthy but was raised where you flavor your food with bacon grease! so her clogged arteries may have started when she was young. she has nearly every ailment but cancer. She is 90 pounds overweight. when she is lonely, she calls for a carry out pizza and is not allowed to have spices due to digestion problems. listening to her problems drains me, it's a sad situation, with soooo many doctors' visits and prescriptions.

Sorry for the two posts...just read this one too.

I actually have a pair of the tone up shoes. They're sketchers. I bought them for work, since I walk a bit. They're super super comfy. I didn't think I felt a difference but I do when i haven't worn them for a while. No, they're no sub for exercise but when I had to stand all day at the hospital, my feet didn't hurt. THAT was a BIG plus!!

Also, I did that too, scrapped the junk, all sugars(even fruit) for two weeks, and my health improved. I added fruits back in after the first week(south beach diet) and I feel great. I don't even crave the junk anymore. That's all mental whereas before it was definitely a combo of mental and physical. I would feel like i was going to vomit when i was hungry. Since doing this diet and altering the way I eat, no vomit feeling. EVER. What a difference!

I know a lot of people like this. I have one friend in particular who is super thin, so she's never thought she has eat right or exercise. She's ALWAYS sick. I think a major problem is the short cut people, even doctors, take to say that everyone who's fat has a poor diet and everyone who's thin is doing everything right. I think that couldn't be further from the truth. Plus it's not just about the amount of calories you eat. People could get fat just eating too much of really healthy food, and that's not necessarily so bad. Or people could be thin eating small amounts of food with no value. That's probably a lot worse. I basically just don't eat simple carbs as much as I can avoid them- those are just a waste of space. They do nothing for you but make you insulin resistant.

I don't know if I go a couple days not eating right or getting enough exercise, I feel really gross. I couldn't eat a poor diet if I wanted to. In fact a lot of people think I'm on a diet or something because I turn down sweets and whatnot, but really it's just because I know sugar makes me feel like shit. Occasionally I like a bit of sweets or something fatty if I'm having a craving, and then it feels good to eat it. But generally speaking, junk food makes me feel really crappy.

a few years ago i stopped eating fast food, cut down on the drinking, and got back to working out regularly.....and WHAMMY---i dropped about 50 pounds. i've unfortunately gained about 15 back since and am trying to lose it again......but its a helluva lot better from where i started a few years ago. you just feel better about yourself when you're eating right and working out regularly.

my main problem was and still is eating at night. perfect example is tonight. i dont get home till 11 or so on mondays. so i will go home and veg out for a little while watching tv. instead of eating chips or something i gotta force myself to make a protein smoothie or just eat some cottage cheese or something.

whoever said they know a person getting the stomach surgery, please call up this thread next year. I want to hear her progress...if any!

hey that is great about the "sketchers" shoes. Not the same shoe, but I got some New Balance sneakers specifically for ankles that "pronate" (as recommended by my podiatrist) and since my ankles don't hurt from wearing them, I can walk like a normal person again. Ankle pain is the pits!

I'm keeping a food log again. I've still been eating cookies and candy bars :(

I got some of those Sketchers just a few days before I read about them here. I had never heard of them before and wouldn't wear them as a source of exercise, but I went to the shoe store looking for shoes to help my plantar fasciitis and they recommended these. I've worn them every day since and the horrible pain is practically completely gone.

But what's this about them causing fractures?? :?

When I was gaining weight a bit all my pants were so short! I had to wear flats for a while and I started getting really bad foot pain that my Dr. said was plantar faciitis. I can't wear flats or I get pain. Plain and simple. I started wearing the sketchers and all my pain went away too. Though, to be honest, simply wearing heels helps too. I guess my foot needs the height!

I think the fractures is people that are using them incorrectly? Maybe trying to run or something? The shoes are a little unstable, forcing your feet and legs to keep them in balance when you walk....as far as I've seen it is not recommended at all to run in them. You could fall and seriously hurt yourself. At least that's my assumption about the breakages.

Funny thing is, right after posting in this thread about changing the way I eat and getting healthier, I got sick. My boyfriend was sick though and after a week I got it. I don't think being healthy could have helped that one!

Five years ago I would have said that all the warnings about processed food were just dreamed up by hippies. Then two things happened. First, my body entered its third decade on this planet and the rumors are true . . . you do start to slowly break down. I was hoping I was the exception and everything was going as planned until 31. So I've come to the realization that the next ten years are going to be very important in determining my future health situation.

The second thing I did was do some research on food. I hate to say it, but I doesn't look appear that the FDA and companies like Kraft really care about healthy eating. I have yet to turn into a health-nazi, mainly due to my aversion to vegetables, but I'm making a conscious effort to limit snacks, avoid fast food and take my lunch to work. And next year I plan on planting my first vegetable garden. Maybe if I put the work into growing them, I will feel compelled to eat them.

I know everyone says you'll eat your veggies eventually but until I was 32, I never believed it. I started doing the SB diet and was sorta forced too. But, with creative cooking, some of them do taste good. If you cook asparagus and broccoli or cauliflower with thin steak and spices, it's good. If you grill it with some lemon and parm cheese it's delicious. I would have never touched a green veggie before. Green beans? One of the most disgusting veggies on the planet! Put them and tomatoes in chili, the kind of chili that simmers for a couple hours, you don't even taste the nasty part, they taste like the chili and they're good. Cucumbers....put lemon and that chili powder that has lemon and has lemon and salt in it, delicious! Seriously, I still wouldn't touch a single one of those veggies plain. But creative cooking and spicing goes a long way to making them edible, or unbelievably, tasty!

  • I love it when morbidly obese people get handicapped license plates, so they can further minimize any exercise they might have to put their bodies through.

Also, it takes a spot away from someone who is handicapped NOT because of poor choices they have made.
I knew it all along, see?

Any advice for a good starter (i.e. SIMPLE ;) ) cookbook? I once chopped the end of my thumb off trying to make salsa to give you an idea of who your dealing with (the thumb ended up growing back  )

I'm also a firm believer that anything thrown into a chili pot turns into chili after several hours. Although I share your opinion on green beans and I might have second thoughts on throwing them into my precious chili!

The one I used was the south beach quick and easy meals. It's mostly meat and veggies, some whole grains, and few desserts. A lot of the meals are really good but you know what? I looked online and found the best things online. I have cookbooks coming out of my ears yet I find recipes to make online daily. There's a really good site called smittenkitchen.com that I get recipes from and tweak. They have an asparagus and chicken with three cheese dish that's so good i just keep it to parm and cheddar, i skip the third cheese(I think it's goat).

I never thought of adding veggies to my chili before. I got the most awesome turkey chili recipe from my grandma and never tried tweaking recipes before. I was a baker not a cook by any means. I could make chicken in the oven and that was the extend of it. But, I started cooking meals for my boyfriend and found I liked it. So we started the South Beach diet and I was cooking nightly. It's very easy. I always thought it was hard. But, yeah so anyhow, I actually tried throwing broccoli into the chili this last time and it was good. I'll be honest, I really don't like broccoli or cauliflower but dressed up, I do. I made cauliflower in a baking pan with some olive oil, red pepper, and some italian seasoning, and it was actually good! Just one piece of advice to everyone, don't ever make cauliflower mash. It's disgusting. It's no sub for real mashed potatoes. It just isn't. They lie.

I know this isn't a food thread, so my apologies for getting off track. I'll add that I did add some refined carbs back into my diet and I really did feel it. It's amazing what a difference your body goes through when you eat crap. I also can't ever see getting fat. I weighed 20lbs more than I do now and that was fat for me and what a difference it made. I can't imagine being a lot more overweight.

Johhny america...I park as far as i can. I need the walk! :) I hate people who wait for up front parking spaces because they're lazy. Hate it! I would get very mad when I had my grandma in the car, who can't walk far, and people are parking in Handicap that don't need it, when she does. People feel so entitled. No one thinks about anyone but themselves anymore. Very sad.

OHH! One last thing, I went to Universal Studios this weekend. It should be renamed to Land of the FLAB. Everyone was fat. Almost EVERYONE!

I am going to have to assess everything I do soon.

I tore a calf muscle and 2 hamstring muscles early in the Spring and havent been able to do much of any exercise. My calorie intake has remained the same, maybe increased... Usually Im distance running, playing baseball, hockey, walking the dog, etc.... Havent been able to do much in about 4-5 months.

Im almost healed and I want to make it an opportunity to really create some new, good habits.

I've been trying to get a good friend of mine to go see a doctor, for 2 years. He has high blood pressure, he knows damned well he does, but the thought of having to take medication makes him crazy.

Well I guess last Friday he took his blood pressure reading and it was 169/90.

Guess who went to the doctor and is now on medication?

    Its one little pill!
It saves you from the next step.....A FUCKING STROKE

    Take me piece by piece.....
Till there aint nothing left worth taking away from me.....
