I hear that as long as you pay child support your credit score will suffer.
Is this true?

It can't be. I pay support and my credit score is fine.

Ah ha! I knew my mom was wrong.
Or maybe I misunderstood. Are the two linked at all?
My brother is in his mid 20’s and pays child support for one kid.
My mom said something like my brother can’t look good on an interview or get a good car because child support has effected his credit score.
That did not make sense to me at all.

Yeah. That doesn't make sense at all. I drive a Honda Accord that was 3 years old at the time and I've gone on a few interviews in the last few weeks and I think I looked damn good.

The only thing that I could think of that may effect it is if it's court ordered but that still makes no sense.

I would think that the only way it could negatively affect your credit score is if you don't pay it...although I still don't see the link between credit score and child support

I would think child support would play more of a factor in determining a credit limit

And that might come into play when he’s trying to get a car, right?

    yes

my initial thought was opening up a credit card, but I guess it would apply to anything (card, mortgage, car, etc.)

Ok. I think I understand a little better now. Thanks.
If he has always paid, than why would it affect his credit limit? If the past has shown he has paid then wouldn’t they raise the limit knowing he has always paid?

I just bugged her one more time about it. hehehe
“I’m not quite sure how, but his child support counts against him somehow.”
It was court ordered. Maybe that’s why? But it’s deducted out of his paycheck no matter where he works.
Sounds like one of life’s bullshit loopholes. There’s tons of those.

I guess it counts since it would be a court ordered debt (for lack of a better term).

If that's really the case, then I can understand how it would affect your credit. It would just be another monthly debt to take into consideration.
