Mike Modano

So Mike Modano is arguably the best US-born hockey player ever, and he's one of the rare guys who has spent his entire career with one franchise (even though Minnesota moved to Dallas). He's been with the organization for 22 years, and now Dallas has said they won't resign him.
Dick move by Dallas or just a business decision?
I would have liked to see the guy get a chance to end his career when he wanted to with the team that he spent his whole career with, but that's just me. Now I kind of hope he gets a chance to come back and finish up in his home state with Detroit.

I'm always a big fan of stars retiring with their teams, but when a player plays waaaay past his prime he kinda forces the hand of the organization.
I hope he does. It would shore up a third line where he would be flanked by Dan Cleary and Jiri Hudler. He's not going to be a huge scorer, but the guy would be solid on the third line. Besides, the Wings have a history of getting the most out of old timers, ie Brett Hull, Dallas Drake, etc. I say offer him 1-1.5 million for one season, and see how it goes. Plus, as a metro-Detroit native, he'd be an instant fan favorite.
Dallas won't improve by keeping him and Modano himself isn't sure he wants to play anymore. But if he does find the desire to try another season it'll be with Detroit I'm betting. Detroit wants him and I'd find it hard to believe he'd look anywhere else.
GO WINGS!
Roberto Clemente.
Besides, he had an incredibly emotional end of the season that felt like a good-bye. That's how his departure should be remembered.
If he wants to go to a team where he feels like he can contribute and maybe win another Cup, more power to him.
Dallas treats the Stars like the red-headed step-child of the city's sports franchises (despite good attendance), but Mo will be missed more than people realize. If this were the Cowboys it would be the equivalent of Troy Aikman or Roger Staubach leaving. It isn't often your team is blessed with a super star, a legend really, that is a clean cut, respectable, classy person through and through who worked tirelessly to familiarize a new fanbase with the game. If it weren't for Modano, hockey would have failed here.
He is also a PJ fan. He was at the 2000 and 2003 Dallas shows! And he always requested PJ during warm-ups.

I remember when he started.
Nice tribute. I gained a lot of respect for him all those years the Oil played the stars in the first couple rounds. He is a class act for sure.
There was some chatter about the Oilers takin a run at signing him despite his age and their own rebuilding efforts, just to have some experience and a third line guy who can fly (he still has wheels!)...I would have no problem with that. Can't hurt to have a guy like that associated with your organization when he hangs 'em up, either...who knows what his plans are after hockey, but he seems like a slam dunk as far as management potential goes.
No disrespect to Modano (he started in my top line on many a video game seasons), but I would rather have the younger guys like Helm, Eaves, Miller and Abdelkader get the minutes (and more importantly, the goddamn cap space).
He was supposed to be there for another year, but his team folded so it had to release him from his contract. So he signed a two-year deal with the Wings for around $2.9 million.

The Red Wings want to sign him, if they haven't got a player in the minors that can get you 30-40 points who is a lot younger then they have problems. The NHL has a grueling 82 game schedule, before the cap I think you could go with a veteran roster and do well in the playoffs, because you could have an expanded roster, now I'm not so sure. The Wings really need to think about getting younger not older. I think a lot of people have been focused on what Chicago has done, not me, Chicago came down with having to get rid of guys to stay within the cap, but to me, I think the moves Vancouver made this off season could make them the favorite next year in the west.
As for Modano he's old.

that was a cool moment.
Nice job by Cleary bringing the puck in and taking a check when making the pass to Modano, and providing the screen
