Jethro Tull - Aqualung

Released the year I was born (1971) and one of my favourite albums of all time but strangely I've never pursued an interest in any of their other albums and don't know which ones are the best or comparable to Aqualung. Any fans with help would be much appreciated... ;)

Yea awesome live, always thought Ian had one leg cause my first show when I was 15 we were the last row in the arena and I was tripping. Then come to see him here at Chastain a few years back he had both legs! He just stands on one leg a lot playing his flute :) Thick as a Brick is awesome and Song from the wood

It's cool that even one person replied to this thanks folks. I got Aqualung in 1983 because Iron Maiden covered Cross Eyed Mary and had to hear the (better) original. The album is always a pleasant journey and it's probably top ten for me. Can't wait to hear more and I ordered 3 albums from amazon last night pretty cheap. Ian Anderson seems to be a master at introducing another instrument to a song at just the right moment.

Sorry, can't think of Jethro Tull without thinking of Ron Burgundy. Great song though.

Gabers beat me to it. The Ron Burgundy cover kicks ass.

There is no other album like "Aqualung" because it was sort of a stepping stone album for the band. It's also their most commercial album which is why it broke them in America, so much so that their follow up album "Thick As A Brick" was highly anticipated and topped the charts when it came out. "Brick" shows Tull making steps towards a more progressive sound, with instrumentation that is just phenomenal. "A Passion Play" contuinued the tradition excellently even though it was slagged by critics at the time. "Minstrel In The Gallery" and "Songs From The Wood" are also excellent albums that I spin often. I would grab those 4 albums at least, and then you can move on from there if you're still interested.

Great album. Picked it up not long ago on vinyl.

Jimmy Page walked into the studio when Martin Barre was playing the solo on Aqualung. He(Barre) didn't know what to do so he just put his head down and played.

There's a Tull song I've never been able to track down. It's a kinda downer acoustic number. Kinda had the sadness of Thick As a Brick but was alot slower and more straight up strummin on the guitar. I heard it listening to records at my buddy's garage one night. His old man had a sweet collection.

Minstrel In The Gallery, Songs From The Wood and Stand Up were the 3 albums I just ordered. I heard Thick As A Brick and Too Old To Rock n' Roll.. at a friends house years ago but don't remember them apart from that I liked them ok. Ian Anderson puts so much effort into his flute playing on Aqualung it's incredible. I still have the original 1971 vinyl in immaculate condition. Look forward to hearing some more albums. :)

Good choices, but "Thick As A Brick" and "A Passion Play" are essential. You gotta grab those too. "Too Old To Rock & Roll" is one of their weakest efforts, definitely not a favorite of mine.

  • Hey Veddertown,

Great choice on the 3 albums. Stand Up might be my favorite. I too, got Aqualung two years ago and got hooked on Tull and picked up all their stuff through '79. The title track on Minstrel in the Gallery is a masterpiece. And Songs from the Wood is a great example of their folks-styled songs. If you like Stand Up a lot, you should pick up Benefit - it was the album that came after Stand Up and before Aqualung.

And when is PJ going to cover a Tull song???

to this day, a tull concert I saw in '72(?) ranks up there with the best I have ever seen. admission was $2.50 . for me, the first 7 albums were, far and away, their best.

    This Was (1968)
    Stand Up (1969)
    Benefit (1970)
    Aqualung (1971)
    Thick as a Brick (1972)
Living in the Past (1972) "greatest hits"
    A Passion Play (1973)

  • Thick as a Brick and Minstrel. Both amazing albums.
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

Really loving the three albums I added to Aqualung and will definately check out more starting with Thick As A Brick. Thanks to everyone for the continued advice which has all been good so far. I watched some recent in studio clips of Ian Anderson on youtube and he is very much a shadow of his former self although still much better than a lot of the shit we endure these days.

In my opinion, Stand Up is their best album. Every song on it is a quality song. Benefit is good, but the songs definitely don't stand out as much as on their second record. They're more...jammy.
