I think I've proclaimed it numerous times on this board -- but I am a huge fan of Elton John. Particularly his (or I guess the band's) 70's material..

The albums Honky Chateau, Madman Across The Water, Tumbleweed Connection, Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player, and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road are all fantastic.

Bernie Taupin wrote some incredible lyrics on Madman Across The Water, an album which has maintained in heavy rotation since the day I discovered it. The picture he paints on Indian Sunset, Levon, and Rotten Peaches are beautifully done. Another one worthy of mentioning is Ticking.

Honky Chateau provides some great work as well: Rocket Man, Mellow, Mona Lisas and Madhatters.

On Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, I think the true gem on that record is Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding.

I've only heard Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and love Funeral for a Friend. Great album.

I also like Elton's song for John Lennon, Empty Garden.

I'm a huge GYBR fan and was going to post to suggest seeking out a specific soundboard show from right after the album was released. While searching for a torrent, I found a blog with it posted...

Enjoy, but seek out the FLACs elsewhere (might have been traders den that I got it from).

Big fan here as well. I really only have his 2 disc greatest hits CD, but the first disc is packed with all his early hits. Can't get better than that CD, stellar from start to finish.

I agree with everything you said. Let me throw in the Caribou album and Captain Fantastic. Captain Fantastic was a total concept album and didn't have a planned radio hit. Just great stuff. The Bitch is back, on Caribou is just classic. I've seen the saucers is a favorite. I remember having Caribou on 8-track and would click to #3, and have to put up with that song before I've seen the saucers each time I wanted to hear it. (On 8-track, there were 4 clicks and on each click, there were 2-3 songs). I love the song Philadelphia Freedom. That one came out of nowhere and was on the radio for a good year. I never saw him live. But fortunately, I attended the Grammy show that year he was honored for as lifetime achievment. And out of the billion songs he could have played, he played Philadelphia Freedom! How lucky was that?!? I think, for me, the album which contained Island Girl was the album where he sort of lost me. I still like him but love the pre-Island Girl stuff. That song he did with KiKI Dee is total cheese if you listen to it today. But back then, I waited to hear it on the radio. Goes to show how I've changed. Oh- finally- His version of Pinball Wizard, to me is better than the Who's version, and I like Elton John's Lucy in the sky better than the Beatles. Not sure he could have come up with those on his own but he really covered them well.
Up here so high I start to shake, Up here so high the sky I scrape, I've no fear but for falling down, So look out below I am falling now, Falling down,...not staying down, Could’ve held me up, rather tear me down, Drown in the river
  • "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" is a masterpiece. "Sweet Painted Lady"..."Grey Seal"...music doesn't get any better than that!
