sitting in my room listening to vs...

and i am instantly transported back to 7th grade when i would sit in my room and listen to vs. over and over and over and over and over again. we moved around a lot growing up, and we had just moved from anchorage, alaska back to california, but in a new city where i didn't know anyone. vs. came out a few months into the 7th grade. junior high is awful for everyone, but to be brand new in a place with no friends was just miserable. that album was a lifesaver. i was at that age when i was discovering music for myself, not just what my folks listened to or what was on the radio. i remember thinking that Ten was the most genius thing i had ever heard when it came out. there was no way they could top that. then they released vs. jesus. my fate was sealed. i would never be the same.
listening to the studio version from start to finish still gives me the chills. every album is special to me, but there is something special about ed's voice on vs.

From Ed's vocals to the band's tight performance, it's the best performance of the band in a studio album, and it's the only album I can make from beginning to end with no temptation to fast forward.ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you.

i feel like i take so much of this album for granted when they play it live, because they have put so much out since then. when i listen to the studio version of rearviewmirror...fuck. i can't help but remember how i felt the first time i listened to it. ten was/is amazing, and got me into the band for sure, but vs. is what made me a lifer.

studio RVM is a monster. i hardly listen to studio PJ anymore, mostly stick to bootlegs. but i recently threw VS in when i was driving the other day and i couldn't believe how powerful sounding go & rvm were.
speaking of RVM... at the end you hear the sound of drumsticks getting thrown up against something or getting spiked to the ground. wasn't it rumored that dave purposely threw them against a wall out of anger for ed & brendan o'brien because neither were satisfied how the drumming sounding at the end of the song and made him do like 100 takes till he got it right?
if that were the case i would LOVE to see a single video theory during the VS days. lot of anger in that one room!0 -

wow, just looked up that show on fivehorizons. "Despite Ed's drinking, PJ is very high energy and intense."0 -
The Gimli show is taped being one of the best early pro-shot PJ performances. Ed is SO drunk.134xxx

VS = best PJ album for me
Everything just clicked into perfect place. They wrote every song together (though you can still hear who the primary writer was on most tracks, I still maintain Indifference sounds like a Jeff Ament classic), I also think Ed's lyrics might've been at their peak, again Indifference but also the story telling of Small Town and Dissident. I also love how Blood is the first track on Side 2, it means I can start the side on RVM and pretend Blood doesn't existMike McCready makes the energizer bunny look tired.0 -
Vs. is great; a true classic.
Ed vocals and Dave A's drums are THE best.I've got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell.
