238 presidential scholars: Bush worst president of modern era, fifth worst in US history

It's one thing for a coterie of liberals at a late-night Washington soirée to say that George W. Bush was the worst president in their lifetimes.

It's another thing when the same is said by the nation's 238 leading presidential scholars, who have been polled annually for the last 28 years.

President Bush ranked worst among modern presidents -- and the fifth worst in history, according to the poll by the Siena Research Institute. Ranking first? President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who led the country from 1933 until his death in 1945.

President Roosevelt served four terms, the longest of any president in history. US presidents became limited to two terms after US states ratified the 22nd Amendment to the US constitution in 1951.

President Barack Obama, who hasn't yet served a full term, rated 15th.

I wish we could have a do-over of the whole last decade when it comes to America's politics. So many disasterous decisions that Bush made that we're all paying for now.

What exactly has Obama done to reverse some of what Bush did. We now have 2 wars going on and he has added more to the national debt in 2 yrs than Bush did in 8. He is adding to our debt at an alarming rate. More taxes of the Rich coming, rich=anyone who is gainfully employed. I even think he has spent more time on the golf course than Bush did, not that I care just commenting that the coverage is different. Huge lack of leadership in the Gulf oil spill. All we hear is what a mess this guy got from the last guy. Man up and do something. My point is Obama is no prize either and 15 is a joke.

The list is kind of flawed. How does Reagan drop 2 spots since 2002 when their has only been 2 president's since and 1 is considered worst of all time and the other hasn't completed even his first term. Just wondering, not that it really matters, because I doubt in a country of 350 million that there are only 228 experts on presidents.

i am far from an obama defender but what you said is pretty misleading. the debt DID increase a lot but that's mostly because dubya didn't count the cost of the wars into the deficit, which it should be, and obama included it, so of course the deficit skyrocketed after having all that wasted $ added into it (which he is just continuing including the bombing of pakistan which displaced millions before winter).

also, taxes are actually lower for the majority of americans under obama. but you'll get no argument from me about 'man up and do something!' like that bs health care reform that is only forcing everyone to buy health insurance saying "well, it's better than nothing! it can always be changed later!" but honestly, when will they change it? they will say give it a few years to see how it works first. they never intended to give us a public option, obama included, just like he never intended to renegotiate NAFTA or do anything about israel's illegal expansion....it's all pandering to his team's base and most of them ate it up.

and i believe obama's definition of "rich" is anyone making over $250,000, so if you are one of the 5% that makes over that good for you and i'm sorry, but it is time for you and the rest of the rich to pay your share of taxes like the rest of us.

Wasn't that partly due to the Bush tax cuts that are set to expire in 2011? I didn't say current taxes I said get ready for tax increases that will be coming down the pike real soon. You can't possibly find enough revenue by taxing that 5% to pay for all of this shit. We really need some sanity in Govt. I am pissed a W and the Repubs as well. Thye spent huge amounts of money definely the the "fiscal conservative party" This is why we need term limits in DC. These friggin people who die while in office due to old age is wrong 50 yrs some of them.

The article reports projected tax increases for individuals making over $250K...just like he has said all along.
Did I miss something? A common tactic for those that have no solid basis for an argument is to claim knoweledge of supposed future events as rationale for their position. You may be right, but let's wait and see before we take your word for it.
