Whenever I play songs on my computer they either skip or pause. I use iTunes and then tried media monkey and am having the same problem. When I sync to iPod they play fine. I thought it was my hard drive and I replaced it only to have same problem. Drivers and soundcard are all up to date. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I

How full is your hard drive? If you're running at almost full capacity, you could have problems. Also, have you upgraded your ram?

    1. I assume you mean while playing mp3s ?

    2. by skipping - do u mean clicks, pops, stuttering, etc

    3. What windows are you using ?

    4. has it always done this ? or started recently ?

I should have said pauses or stuttering instead of skipping. I am using windows 7. yes, while using mp3. this has just started recently. it happened after the last itunes update, but it also pauses while using monkey media. hope you have some ideas. thank you.

Could be a ram issue, but it's curious that all this happened after your last itunes update. Might want to head over to the boards on the Apple forum to see if people are having the same problem.

    I'll try anything!!
    Youtube works, pandora works.
I tried media monkey and it pauses as well.
Thought it was hard drive, so i replaced it, and it still pauses.

try using a program called DPC Latency Checker (just google it) . it shows how your hardware is responding with streaming data.

Do you get spikes in the readings? - what are the approx values you are getting ?
(u will understand what i am talking about once u run the program. it is very small and safe.)

    I so appreciate your help.
    I didn't see any spikes.
    test interval 1000
    current latency 125
    absolute maximum 443

and this is what it said
This machine should be able to handle real-time streaming of audio and/or video data without drop-outs.

    thanks so much...........

I'm just thowing out ideas at this point.

    - Did you restart your computer after the update?
    - I know your hd is new, but maybe try a defrag.
    - Have you imported any cd's since the update? If not, try if to see if it works. Try different formats of import.
    - Is your computer powered on all the time? If so, maybe something is overheating.
    - Do cd's play?

    no problem.

I had a similar problem recently and couldn't solve it - I formatted and reinstalled everything and it was fine after. Lets hope u don't have to do that. I believe my problem also had to do with my ipod.

I suspect you might be getting some subtle clicks and pops streaming sound/video from the internet but maybe you didn't notice them.

443 absolute maximum is a bit high.
current latency is a value that should change constantly. if it stays roughly around 125, that is definitely too high. DPC latency is really useful when you disable hardware one at a time and then check the values. Some hardware might be causing a conflict.

I don't use windows 7 so im not familiar with the settings you can change. Try googling how you can optimize it for playing sound/video. Youtube should have some stuff.

Are you sure your drivers are ok ? maybe look into that. Maybe try older drivers.
If you could get your hands on another soundcard to test that would be great. Not sure if you are using desktop/laptop.

Some of Sidum's ideas are useful as well. So many combinations of things you could try...unfortunately with this sort of problem you might end up trying to fix it for days..
  • Thank you both so much for all of your assistance. I greatly appreciate it!
