Mark Lanegan Solo Stuff

Any fans of Mark Lanegan's solo work?...or indeed his many collaborations?

I was/am a big Screaming Trees fan but I find his solo work absolutely breathtaking...I saw him in Manchester a few months ago and he did a fantastic set...you could 'feel' his voice as well as hear it.

Any other fans of solo Lanegan?

I saw him in Manchester a few years back doing a solo show - it was really good. He also fronted the band that supported Depeche Mode in the UK in December, but I have to say, they were pretty dire!

I'm a huge fan of Lanegan solo. He is a brilliant songwriter and he doesn't seem to get the credit his music deserves.

Huge fan of all things Lanegan. His solo albums are fantastic, and lately, I have been listening to his collaborations with Isobel Campbell quite a bit. Also, Soulsavers. Some Misunderstanding is a beautiful, beautiful song.

Amazing talent ... on his own my favourite is Whisky For The Holy Ghost ... but you just can't beat ALL the stuff he has done with Isobel Campbell ... there voices together are just magical ... and when you see them live together they seem so shy onstage ... but as soon as they begin to sing it is just utterly spine tingling

I've been fortunate enough to be allowed to listen to the new Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan album 'Hawk'...it is truly excellent...their voices just fit together.

I love the fact that Mark has such a varied catalogue of work behind him and it all sounds so authentic. He doesn't sound like a "grunge" singer trying to sing country songs, his voice just works so well with whatever style of music he tries. As much as I'm really looking forward to his next solo record, I thought Soulsavers "Broken" was the best album of last year and I can't wait for the next album with Isobel either.

I was at last week's show at The Metro in Sydney and once again he didn't disappoint. From the opening line of the night - "Did you call for the night porter?..." - THAT voice had the audience transfixed for the next hour. I've been lucky enough to see Mark live 9 times over the years in various incarnations (Screaming Trees, Mark Lanegan Band, Twilight Singers, Gutter Twins, with Isobel Campbell, An Audience with Greg Dulli & Mark Lanegan (twice), Soulsavers, and now an acoustic solo show) and each show has been amazing - it is entirely possible that he will never do anything that I dislike!

The only downsides to the show for me were the support act (Amaya Laucirca - great voice, really boring songs) and that Mark was only onstage for around an hour (it started at 9.30 and we were queuing at the merch table by 10.35) but when you look at the setlist I guess you can't really complain!

Agree, although sometimes I see his lack of recognition as a blessing...kind of like a hidden gem. I agree though that it's baffling that a man of his immense talents is so widely underappreciated. I've seen him live about 4 times now, but all through collaborations. I would kill to see his current solo tour; the Live at Leeds performance is amazing. He truly seems to get better with age.

This early review of the new Isobel Campbell CD, 'Hawk' looks very promising:

Yeah I really love The Winding Sheet, I'll Take Care of You and Here Comes that Weird Chill is one of my favourite releases by him. It's a great EP, I actually prefer that to Bubblegum.

It's "Mark Lanegan Live At Leeds - Brudenell Social Club." It's a cd of a show that ML played in Leeds in April this year and he's been selling it at shows on his acoustic solo tour. The cd is missing 3 tracks that were played at the show - 'Julia Dream', 'On Jesus' Program', 'Hanging Tree' (although there seems to be a version of this show online that includes 'Hanging Tree') - but it's still a fantastic album. The more I listen to it, the more I absolutely love 'Message To Mine' and 'Mirrored' was a nice surprise to hear too.

You can find Live at Leeds easy enough by googling it ;) The performance is killer. I especially love the acoustic versions of Message to Mine and Hangin' Tree. His live performances have improved drastically since he quit smoking about a year or more ago now.

To Sensi, how did you get to hear 'Hawk' already? That's awesome! How was it? Care to provide some details? The review I posted mentions that Lanegan closes the album with a gospel-like track. Lanegan and gospel-like music/vocals make for some of his best material, IMO. Can't wait to hear it...

EDIT: Nevermind, I see 'Hawk' is out there now.... :)

Yeah I know but I prefer originals to downloads, will have to settle for the download for now. Can anyone recommend a decent download site (never do downloads  ).

If Mark did any kind of promotion, he'd be a lot bigger than he is. I love that he's a cult fave though, for my own selfish reason. I was at that Leeds gig, with about 299 others. Super intimate and just amazing. And from recent interviews he seems to finally be in a good place. He has certainly worked at that, so I'm quite happy for him. And as fans, we're all very lucky he has managed to overcome his demons. He very easily could have gone the way of Layne. I'll be seeing him again next month solo and then again with Isobel in September. He's constantly performing in the UK- I love it!

I absolutely love everything Lanegan does. Screaming Trees were great, but he has so much underappreciated material on his solo albums and collaborations. I saw him with Soulsavers last year, he sounded incredible during their set. I was supposed to see him on one of his solo acoustic tours a few years back, but a bunch of shows ended up being canceled. Besides seeing him solo, I would also love to see The Gutter Twins. His voice and Greg Dulli's sound excellent together, and I've seen some great setlists from their shows. I'm looking forward to "Hawk," and I'm sure he'll have something else planned not too long after that release.

Yes! I was so excited from it that I started a thread over at onewhiskey, haha. Denis Leary has commented before that he's a big fan of Greg Dulli and Lanegan. They've always used their songs superbly on the show.

In addition to Come On Over (Turn Me On), they've played the Gutter Twins' Front Street on last season's premier. They played One Hundred Days at some point during the fourth season when Tommy was hallucinating in the middle of a fire rescue (almost shit when I heard that one start playing--one of my favs). I also recall them playing the Twilight Singers' Bonnie Brae when Tommy beat the living shit out his brother in the third season.

In case you can't tell, big fan of the show...actually it's the only thing I watch on TV with any kind of regularity.

Mark did a signing afterwards, which was pretty nifty. Got a photo with him and the setlist signed by he and Isobel. It was a great time, as always.

There's another live cd of Mark's solo tour out now. This one was recorded at The Esplanade Hotel in Melbourne in July. The track listing is pretty much the same as the Sydney show I posted earlier (slightly different to the Leeds cd).

It's a really good show, although I'm not sure I like it as much as the Leeds cd. There's just something special about the Leeds cd that doesn't seem to come across on the Melbourne one. Maybe I've just played Leeds too much...

  • I caught Lanegan a few months back in Wolverhampton, awesome set, really come to love the man'smusic just such a distinctive voice. I was also lucky to catch him last friday at the Barbican in London with Isobel Campbell on the tour to promote their new album Hawk.

Trying to track down his back cat on vinyl, already have Bubblegum, i have it all on my computer but it''s not the same as the black circle, i secured I'll take Care of you from ebay for £40 but that his a christmas present off my Wife so will need to wait on that one, I also have Hawk and their first album together.

Came to his music through a friend who turned me on to him through Queens material that Mark appears on.
