Uganda Anti-Homosexuality Bill

Inspired and organized (supposedly) by American evangelical leaders... this bill would allow homosexuals to be penalized by DEATH. It would also allow Ugandans living outside the country to be extradited and punished in Uganda.

This is probably the most ignorant and most stunning thing I've seen in awhile:

Everything not forbidden is compulsory and eveything not compulsory is forbidden. You are free... free to do what the government says you can do.

There is a lot of crazy stuff going on in Africa all the time, in Zimbabwe the government says if you are white you cannot own a bakery or barber shop!

    CONservative governMENt

Our government is the potent, the omnipresent teacher. For good or for ill, it teaches the whole people by its example. Crime is contagious. If the government becomes a law-breaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy. - Louis Brandeis

    lol

Agree; never cease to be stunned by ignorance

There's a lot of issues currently relating to men feeling 'emasculated' - wearing a condom, seeing other men holding hands or kissing ('urgh') - it's all reflections of our own fear. We hate it in ourselves I guess.

One of my closest friends has cerebal palsy, which affects his movements tho not his intellect. I once asked him 'doesn't it upset you when people shout and curse and abuse you?'

He said 'Nah man, they look at me, and they see themselves in me, and they fucking shit themselves!'

Then he played a shaky version of 'old man' on the guitar and sang. Epiphanic

my son is invited to race the world championship BMX races in S.Africa in 30 days because he is the current world champion, the last world championship race was held in Adelaida Australia and he said it was so nice there and that the local people were very cool to be around, but there is no way I'd let him go to S.Africa, too many reports of violence toward Americans, the USAC (United States of America Cycling) rep called me and said the riders would be well taken care with a ride to and from hotel to track...I told him no freaking way.

But then again it's been a long time round my way since we could leave the front door open. It's a jungle out there!

I did quite a bit of research on the South African violence statistics and before the world cup preparations I found these figures. Interpol put the murder rate at just under 50 000 a year, the South African coroners put it at 80 000 a year and this is with a population of under 60 000 000, the USA has over 7 times the population and around 15 000 murders a year. It is a pity that your son cannot enjoy the country but I think you have made the right decision especially as the world cup will be over and the reports I am getting is that there is going to be a lot of xenophobic violence. The government deployed armoured personnel carriers this morning in anticipation of this.

Looks like this issue has been simmering for a while (although this is from wikipedia :problem: ) Plus, it appears this from British doctrine. I think the blue-eyed W.M.A. devil gets a pass on this one.

Source (WIKI): "One example of continuing discrimination came from Uganda, where President Yoweri Museveni ordered the Criminal Investigation Department to locate and arrest homosexuals in that nation. On July 5, 2005, by a vote of 111 to 17 with three abstentions, the Ugandan parliament approved a proposed constitutional amendment stating that ‘marriage is lawful only if entered into between a man and a woman,’ and that ‘it is unlawful for same-sex couples to marry.’ A parliamentary spokesman said that specific criminal penalties will be enacted later when the Ugandan penal code is revised."

it is a shame that some leaders in our own government agree with the leaders in uganda that support this law. talk about legislating hate and intolerance.

Yeah, its one thing to dispute same sex marriage, but capital punishment?
Fuck... How can we let countries get away with this shit? And if it really is started by the evangelical leaders, that makes my blood boil. Like the condom thing... I really hate religious people letting their beliefs and "christian morals" get in the way of an entire continent's path to recovery and the 21st century.

i agree with you. it really frustrates me when providing condoms and education on how to prevent stds should be the way to go, they instead throw money at abstinence only education. like that is going to prevent people from having sex or something. people are going to do what they are going to do. i feel it is highly ignorant to let religious doctrine affect real world problems and influence real world policy on how to deal with said problems.

    Exactly.
I've mentioned him before but one of my profs specialized in topics in africa... he said he actually sat in with a doctor while the doctor saw patients. he was telling them not to use condoms! that they will INCREASE your chance of aids!!

He also mentioned women telling him sex isn't something they do, its something that happens to them. How fucking terrible... No offense to anyone but fuck the pope - leave Africa alone and things will be for the better

i couldn't agree more. i think that doctor should have his medical license taken for out and out lying to that patient. all of the research out there points dead against his medical advice to that patient. i agree with you about sex happening to the women, that is absoultely terrible, and about the pope as well. africa will continue to be 3 centuries behind when they listen to a man who preaches values from 2000 years ago.
