I watched it the lady is very well informed. The situation is quite unbelievable and yet some people still choose to remain ignorant.

A few weeks ago my friend needed petrol. She turned into a B.P. forecourt close to her house.I said "Your not buying your petrol here are you?" ... she looked at me surprised and asked why ... astonished I said "The B.P. situation in the Gulf of Mexico" she said "Oh I don't bother with that kind of stuff" ... I got out the car and walked to her house

I have forwarded her and others the link

That is terrifying, but rings true. From reports it appears as if everyone but BP and the Feds are being kept out of the Gulf. That is not reassuring.

Interesting video. Scary about the cleanup and lack of response. Also, very concerning about the EPA air monitoring saying all is ok when people are getting sick.

As for the respirator situation...the type of respiratory that OSHA permits to be worn voluntarily would not protect from the hazard (assuming it exists and the EPA monitoring is incorrect or insufficient). And they are right to not just let people wear the respirators without the proper medical clearance and training. Otherwise they are pretty useless anyhow. So, the issue there is you would think they'd be conservative and test and train the people and provide them with the proper respirators with the proper fit and the proper knowledge to keep them effective. It's surprising to me that they wouldn't.

Well, since the BP stations are locally owned and operated it is a pretty crappy situation to be in. Boycott and hurt the local people and hope to hurt BP, or still go their so the local owners and workers don't suffer but support BP's bottom line. I've not yet decided and I'll admit, that I did go to a BP gas station the other day specifically thinking whether or not it was a good idea or not.

that's a tough one, i stopped buying gas at BP but owners usually only make roughly 20cents a gallon and 2 other things

-just because you buy your gas elsewhere doesn't mean BP didn't have a hand in it somehow(refineries, transportation, wells, pipelines...)

-it's not as if the other major gas stations don't do shitty things, like shell in nigeria, exxon in alaska....

what we really need is a push by the public to demand alternatives. until the people demand more from our corporate sponsored politicians we will continue to have budgets with $15billion total proposed for alternatives and $56billion just for loan guarantees for new nuclear power plants which will take years to build and several decades to repay....imagine the groundwork that would pave for photovaltaics in uninhabitable desert regions of the west or turbines powered by tides or wind farms on the plains of wyoming or some state with open land.

there's technology for more efficient engines, like electric cars, already here but that's not what is getting most of the tax money....instead it gets passed to the usual investors like oil, gas and coal.

another thing to remember is it's not just the federal government that subsidizes those industries but certain states do as well including tax breaks, credits and other corporate welfare.

I'm glad stargirl69 got out of the car and walked. If not only to make a point about buying from a station with the distaster creator's name, but also to get her friend to wake up. "I don't bother with that kind of stuff." WTF??? How could you not bother with a disaster of this magnitude? And, what kind of stuff gets under the skin of people with this attitude? Trivial shit, I'm sure.

    She was great!

I think what's an even bigger issue to this is the idea of Peak Oil. I've read at Sierraclub.com that we will be at peak oil much sooner than later, and if there's anything to do right now, we've got to get off of our reliance of oil. If our govt won't do it, we need to do it individually. Off-shore deep water drilling is an act of desperation because all of the shallow water drilling is already taken. There's not much of anything there after all the deep water wells are emptied.
