Your FAVORITE '90s Albums

A great decade of music. Here's mine:
1. Dangerous - Michael Jackson; first started listening to MJ heavily in 5th grade before the release of "Invincible" (a disappointment). When I heard Dangerous, something changed for me. Just love this album and my favorite by him. To me, there are so many great songs on this album.
2. Yield - Pearl Jam; favorite album from our boys and a great one as we all know. Love "In Hiding" and "Low Light". Took a couple listens and then I fell in love with this album.
3. Achtung Baby - U2; a 180-degree turn from The Joshua Tree by U2 and it's just a great record. One of my all time favorites
4. Ok Computer - Radiohead; Radiohead still maintained their sound from their first two albums and showed signs of what was to come with Kid A. Radiohead are geniuses.
5. Ten - Pearl Jam; well, we all know about this one.
6. In Utero - Nirvana; While Nevermind is great, In Utero is what got me hooked to Nirvana. That 1-2 punch of "Serve the Servants" and "Scentless Apprentice" to start off the album is great. "Serve the Servants" is my favorite Nirvana song.
7. Blood Sugar Sex Magic - RHCP; funk, funk, and more funk, to me, blended in with rock brings in a great Chili Peppers album. John Frusciante at his finest.
8. Rage Against the Machine - RATM; rap/rock/metal along with Tom Morello's bad ass playing and Zach de la Rocha's lyrics brings a one of a kind band where there were god awful immitators after this album and band came out. "Bullet in the Head" is a great track.
9. Pop - U2; I really love this album and it's a good album, but the production doesn't seem done. I hope U2 decides to rework this album like they did with the singles from the album.
10. The White Stripes - The White Stripes; their rawest album and it's a great debut. Jack White didn't find his voice yet, but his playing sent shivers down my spine when I first heard this album.
Morning Glory by Oasis and The Color and the Shape by Foo Fighters get a honorable mention to this list.

EV Solo: 6/16/11 Boston, 6/18/11 Hartford,
Nirvana's Nevermind, because it's an easy album to listen to, so it makes it perfect for repeat listening.
Favorite song: Smells Like Teen Spirit
Radiohead's OK Computer. It's just so lush, the guitar tone is incredible, the lyrics are ace, and the sound on a whole is pretty inimitable.
Favorite Song (at the moment): The Tourist
In Flames' Whoracle. This is getting into metal territory, but this is another album the production plays a big part in my liking. The guitars just sound huge, and the riffs and melodies are there to back it up.
Favorite Song: The Hive
Stone Temple Pilots' Tiny Music...Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop, because it shows an evolved STP, not just their grunge clone early days. The jazz influence that colors the album creates a great atmosphere, and works well with Weiland's then-new vocal style.
Favorite Song: Adhesive
Pearl Jam's Vitalogy. It's raw, visceral, punky, and inspired. Which is everything that made their early days so glorious.
Favorite Song: Corduroy
Nine Inch Nails' The Fragile. This album is fucking daunting. The amount of songs, the layers and layers of sound, the abrasiveness and the softness intertwining...it's a landmark.
Favorite Song: Just Like You Imagined
Weezer's Blue Album. Simply put, this album is summery and fun. I can listen to it anytime, regardless of my mood.
Favorite Song: My Name is Jonas
Weezer's Pinkerton. I didn't think I'd have two albums from the same band, but Pinkerton is such a different beast compared to their other work that it deserves mention. It got me through a rough patch of high school, and at the time I could really relate to Rivers' lyrics. Now that I'm a bit more mature, I can still find enjoyment in the dark mood of the album, and the raw guitars.
Favorite Song: Butterfly
Muse's Showbiz. It's a strong debut, and it also presents a slightly more stripped down and down-to-earth version of Muse, which is a nice change considering their penchant for all things epic. It's another album I think has a great overall "mood" to, and all the songs fit together to make it an enjoyable listen.
Favorite Song: Sunburn
Soundgarden's Superunknown. It's the first record I ever got from an actual record store, so that in itself holds some meaning for me. But I quickly came to realize why the clerk told me to "play it loud", and it became one of my favorite records in short order. Out of all the grunge music I avidly listened to (not that I don't anymore), Superunknown has aged the best for me so far.
Favorite Song: My Wave/Like Suicide, can't pick one.
I think I went a little too in-depth.
"Vinyl or not, you will need to pay someone to take RA of your hands" - Smile05
424, xxx
The album that turned me into a music fanatic. Amazing song after amazing song. I honestly don't know what to say about this one, but it's an absolute masterpiece from one of the few remaining bands that matter.
2. Nas - Illmatic
The greatest rap album of all time, it features excellent jazzy production paired with Nas' impeccable wordplay. "Life's a Bitch" features the best guest verse ever (courtesy of AZ) and I can't help but quote this record all the time whenever I think I'm badass. "I don't sleep, 'cuz sleep is the cousin of death". Unbelievable.
3. Talk Talk - Laughing Stock
No other album has enabled me to become "lost" in its sonic landscape quite like this one. "After the Flood" is the greatest song ever. No, wait, "New Grass" is. Oh, I forgot about "Ascension Day"! Mindblowing stuff.
4. Slint - Spiderland
This album really creeped me out for awhile, but I would keep coming back to it nonetheless, and now it's one of my favorite records period. A precursor of sorts to modern post rock, "Good Morning, Captain" is one of the best songs ever.
5. R.E.M. - Automatic for the People
While I love R.E.M.'s '80s work just as much as the next guy, this is nonetheless a masterpiece. Beautiful song after beautiful song.
6. U2 - Achtung Baby
While people consider it fun to insult Bono and Co. these days, they forget all of the amazing music that they've made. This is no exception. "Zoo Station," and the rest of this record, forever changed my perception of this band.
7. Elliott Smith - XO
This guy should be much more of a legend than he already is. "Waltz #2" is a perfectly written song.
8. Nirvana - MTV Unplugged in New York TIE with Pearl Jam - Vitalogy
It's hard for me to get into these grunge records as I used to, but Nirvana's MTV Unplugged proves that, even removed of much of his sonic attack, Cobain is as poignant a songwriter as anybody was. Also, "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" is the greatest cover of all time. I absolutely love Pearl Jam, and Eddie Vedder is pretty much my hero, but whenever I listen to them I usually revert back to live boots rather than their records. Vitalogy always stuck out, however. "Corduroy" is the jam.
9. Modest Mouse - The Lonesome Crowded West
This is Modest Mouse at their most trashy and visceral, and the whole thing is strangely captivating, particularly "Teeth Like God's Shoeshine," which is one of the gnarliest openers ever penned.
10. A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders
Pretty much the go-to "alternative" hip-hop band, these guys are songwriters first and foremost, and this record (along with The Low End Theory, which I could have easily included as well) proves it. "Electric Relaxation" is too good.
2. Alice In Chains- Dirt ('92)
3. Nirvana- In Utero ('93)
4. Metallica- Metallica ('91)
5. Soundgarden- Superunknown ('94)
6. Stone Temple Pilots- Core ('92)
7. Radiohead- OK Computer ('97)
8. Smashing Pumpkins- Siamese Dream ('93)
9. Tool- Aenima ('96)
10. White Zombie- Astro-Creep: 2000 ('95)
honorbale mention:
Green Day- Dookie ('94)
Offspring- Smash ('94)
Dave Matthews Band- Crash ('96)
Rage Against The Machine- Battle Of Los Angeles ('99)
Foo Fighters- The Colour And The Shape ('97)
Alanis Morrisette- Jagged Little Pill ('95)
Prodigy- Fat Of The Land ('97)
Pearl Jam- Yield ('98)

That's an album I bought at the time it came out and then never listened to it. Now, only a couple of the songs have held up for me.
Ten
Jar of Flies
Gibson Amphitheatre (Los Angeles): 10/7/09
yeah... I loved that album for a while, but I can't really remember the last time that I felt the desire to listen to it.
I'm a bit surprised that Counting Crow's August & Everything After didn't make anyone else's list.
