I totally agree with this. In 2005, I saw the Stones in Pittsburgh and this really SHITTY grunge-esque Nirvana ripoff opened. It would have put a damper on the whole evening if I wasn't tripping on shrooms!

Favorite opener that I've seen was also the only time I've seen this band: Wintersleep. Front row at Virgin Fest in Calgary last year. All afternoon in the sun with little water was so worth it!

Pearl Jam when they opened for Neil Young at the Gorge in 1993 for me...
They should have included that show in that Gorge set.

    For me:

    1. My Morning Jacket (almost blew away PJ IMO)
    2. The Black Crowes (opening for NY)
    3. Gomez (starting to dig them alot)

  • Sparta, My Morning Jacket, Death Cab for Cutie, and Band of Horses were all equally awesome to see open for Pearl Jam.

  • Social Distortion and Social Distortion.

Didn't really like any of the others except Bad Religion, and I'm not really a big fan of them either.

I guess they weren't the opening band when I saw Pearl Jam. What year did they open for PJ?

That is often the case (e.g, Ted leo) but sometimes you can get lucky: MMJ, Black Keys and BOH. And over the years, ive seen a few warm up bands that turned out to be pretty good. Van halen opening for Black Sabbath in 1978 at MSG was pretty memorable, and Cheap Trick opening for AC/DC the following month! Other interesting warm ups ive seen -- John Mellencamp opening for the Kinks in 1980, and, probably the best-- The Clash opening for the Who at the Pontiac Silverdome in 1982. Ive also seen a bunch of great bands open for the Stones (Lenny Kravitz, RHCP, Foo Fighters), but the Stones usually pick someone who is well established. Its more fun seeing new bands on the way up.
Edit: I forgot a couple of good ones: Sonic Youth and Social Distortion opening up for Neil Young in 1991! Nine Inch Nails opening for Bowie in 1995

    1. Toronto '09 Pre-show extravaganza (does this count?)
    2. Band of Horses
    3. The Black Keys
    4. Bad Religion
    5. My Morning Jacket

Tied for last place: Sleater Kinney and Ted Leo and the Pharmacists

Band of Horses and MMJ I've really gotten into lately - MMJ I know I would have enjoyed more had the sound been better, and had I been more familiar with their music at the time.

Loved, loved, LOVED Band of Horses at MSG II- it was perfect for me as I had been listening to them for awhile and was thrilled to see they'd be with PJ that night.

Also liked My Morning Jacket in 2006- had heard them on the Elizabethtown soundtracks prior to that.

Didn't care for Bad Religion at Philly IV and missed most of Sleater Kinney's set in 2005 (not really a fan of either anyway).

    Ben Harper

In no particular order. All were excellent, although PJ crowds tend to ignore the opening acts so it's better to see them in front of their own crowds if you can. I did that for Sleater-Kinney in 2005 and they were WAAYYY better in a small venue in front of enthusiastic fans.

I wish I had seen My Morning Jacket, they rock.
