This fucking album means so much to me. Long, long before there was Pearl Jam, when I was a kid, there were many bands, but Van Halen was the fucking SHIT! All of their original albums with Dave were absolutely timeless.

None of those albums represent that more than Fair Warning. Just, one of my absolute favorite albums ever made.

Here is to Van Halen's Fair Warning! From beginning to end. Let it be known here if you too are a fan of this classic rock, timeless album of goodness.

Fucking incredible album. Unchained, Hear About it Later, Mean Streets, So This is Love.

Before PJ I was a huge Van Halen fan. Traveled to see them. Collected their stuff. I still have a bunch of that. Fair Warning kicks ass.

Actually the previous record 'Women and Children First' had synthesizer on 'And the Cradle Will Rock'. 'Diver Down' followed 'Fair Warning' and doesn't have much synth but does have 4 cover songs.

One of my all time faves also. Saw them 4 times with Dave and 3 with Sammy. Beginning with the 1981 Invasion.

Mean Street - Possibly the heaviest or edgiest of Van Halen's songs. Of course you know the famous intro but the rhythm playing is just another example of Eddie's prowess at rhythm guitar. If he completely lacked the ability to play a solo, he would still get credit as a fantastic rhythm player. He never just hits barre chords. Always driving, always riffing. And one of Dave's best lyrical efforts.

Dirty Movies - Their darkest song? On their darkest album? Maybe House of Pain (1984) has a say in that fight. Eddie doesn't play slide much but pulls it off here pretty well. Again, the key to this song is the fantastic rhythm playing. Not sure if this is inspired by a real person or not but VH doesn't usually venture into territory like this.

Sinner's Swing - Yes! I do hate the cheesy chorus, but I love this little shuffle of a song. A dirty little song about raw lust. Nobody does that shit better than Van Halen.

Hear About it Later - This was an anthem of my youth. The ultimate rebellion song. Brilliant intro. Driving riffs. Outstanding backup vocals on the chorus. Absolutely grounded playing by Mike and Alex. Impossible solo. Even has cowbell!! Some of Dave's best work. Eddie's tone is just unreal - "Brown" is how he described it and I can't think of a better adjective. This is early Van Halen at their absolute peak.

Unchained - You all know it. Again, a minimal solo and the riffing is the star. Textbook example of Eddie's gift at rhythm playing. He never ever plays it straight with open chords or barre chords. He always has to add little licks and fills. He drives the song forward just as much as Alex and Mike. And of course everyone loves the breakdown. "Come on Dave, give me a break!" Awesome.

Push Comes to Shove - Yes, kind of a Rolling Stones rip off, but still cool. Eddie's solo is phenomenal here. Lots of harmonics.

So This is Love? - Great song! Love the chorus and the swinging intro. Just a fun song. Again, Eddie refuses to play it safe in the chorus when he could have just been strumming big chords and singing along. Love the clapping, the solo, and the fact that it wasn't overdubbed.

Sunday Afternoon in the Park/One Foot Out the Door - Some noodling with keyboards and bass and then a furious ending. Eddie's solo is aggressive and fits the song perfectly. This song sounds dated to me (because of the synth) and it is too short but a good example of Eddie's solo tricks.

Overall - A+ Thanks for starting this thread. Made me go back and dig up some old VH. I wish they would get off their asses and do something.

Women and Children First was one of my first two pieces of music I got as a kid, and 25 years later, it's still one of my favorite albums. It's Van Halen's best album from start to finish, imho.

I remember reading somewhere that Fair Warning was the album that Eddie had full control of and that's why it sounded different and kicked ass in my opinion, because it was obvious that the two albums that followed, Diver Down and 1984 were NOT like that. It basically said that Fair Warning was Eddies album and that's the kind of sound and style he was wanting to do at the time, it is EASILY my favorite Van Halen album.
