Gen. McChrystal Conspiracy Theories

There will be some interesting conspiracy theories in the next few days so I’ll start it off. Consider this one I dreamed up last night while consuming a six pack of Bell's Two-hearted ale:

In the last few months, McChrystal is growing increasingly upset that White House is not adequately supplying him with the required assets and personnel to successfully complete his mission. He knows he is losing control and if the situation doesn't improve in the next three months the war will be lost. He also knows that he won’t get the support he needs it time from the White House. So sometime in the last month he figures out the only way to get full support of the White House . . . by officially making it Obama's war. And the only way he figures he can do this is by sacrificing his career.

Now his biggest fear is that his strategy will tossed aside or altered if a fresh commander is brought in, but he has one ace up his sleeve . . . General Petraeus. He probably gambled that Obama would pick Petraeus as the natural successor . . . he is popular, politically savvy, and privy to the war in Afghanistan. Petraeus also has supported McChrystal’s strategy and is already deeply involved in the war. The chain of command would more or less not be severely impacted with Petraeus taking over. It would not be logical for Obama to choose anyone else.

McChrystal is also a military historian. He knows MacArthur was forced out of command when he publically questioned Truman while in the Korean War. Precedent has been set. He now needs a media outlet to set his plan in motion. Enter Rolling Stone.

Rolling Stone is the perfect choice. They are left-leaning and would feel morally obligated to present an uncensored account of their time with the general and his staff. Rolling Stone is also well established and respected. So he arranges for a reporter to follow him around and probably starts his resignation letter back in April.

In the story, McChrystal was successful in venting his frustration mainly through un-named aids. Nothing strategic is released but he is successful in violating the chain-of-command. He forces Obama’s hand. Obama has no other choice then to ask McChrystal for his resignation. As noted earlier, precedent has been set.

By publically acknowledging that the White House is holding back any successful chance of winning the war, McChrystal has successfully shifted responsibility to Obama. You can argue otherwise, but Obama has been forced to acknowledge he is the Commander-in-Chief. Obama’s actions, starting Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010, are officially going to dictate if the war in Afghanistan is won or lost. And as much as Obama wanted to avoid it, this is officially his war now. The White House can no longer afford to dilly-dally in supporting the strategy.

They must win this war. Obama’s war.

Any thoughts on this? Any other theories out there? Where is Drifting By The Storm when you need him??

Well... you did have some beers... :D

I dunno... part of me thinks that McChrystal just go too frustrated with the civilian leadership and the un-winnable situation that he was in. He was in the position for a year, the situation didn't get much better, and he was going to have a political fight to get the additional troops he was looking for.

This was a way out for him personally... Maybe he did do it for the big picture reasons you laid out, but I think that maybe he just wanted an out?

Those Bells have 7.0% alcohol in them. You start to see things after beer #5

Anyway, your opinion means just as much as mine . . . jack squat. But it is fun to wonder. I just think McChrystal and his staff are too smart to fall prey to Rolling Stone.

All brilliant after a few beers of course, but "Rolling Stone as well established and respected"?, you might have a drinking problem.

The "respect" part is open to debate but the brand name is certainly known by all Americans. And yes, I probably do have a drinking problem. 8-)

There is a defined mission?? What is it these days?

    Ah, found it!
    McChrystal's mission statement:

"to conduct operations in Afghanistan to reduce the capability and will of the insurgency, support the growth in capacity and capability of the Afghan National Security forces and facilitate improvements in governance and socio-economic development, in order to provide a secure environment for sustainable stability that is observable to the population."

awesome. A bunch of unquantifiable BS.
As I thought, nothing has changed in nearly a decade. Perpetual war it is...

Here is my conspiracy theory. Sometimes people would like to get out of commitments, but for whatever reasons do not do so overtly. They don't say, "I quit," or "I'm leaving you." They then do things that will guarantee that they will be asked to quit or leave, whether that be spending a month with an RS reporter or the night with your best friend.

Verrrry interesting. Doubt you could prove it, but it makes sense. And as much as I dislike Rolling Stone, I would agree that it's a respected source of information.

you guys are off base on this one..the general is actually a extra terrestrial alien who was placed on our planet and offered a high ranking position in our military in exchange for E.T technology, his knowledge of modern and future warfare made him a shoe in for the position of general, his real intentions for coming to earth are to
nuke the gay whales for his distant relatives the illegal aliens.
this little skirmish with nobama and rolling stoned was a diversion tactic to give him the time he would need to shape shift into a right wing republican tea party banger named Arnold Swartzassinger then run for the soon to be open Arizona house seat.
caution: this little alien could be posing as Joe Americans mother, brother, sister or even the date you met at the bar last night.
and that's the truth...I read in the democratic timez magazine.......

    :lol::lol::lol: :shock: :D:D
