WOW!! K-Rudd has been ousted and Julia Gillard is Australia's first female Prime Minister.
Personally I am not surprised, poor old K-Rudd has really fudged a lot of things, but she was there too.

So what does everyone think of this? I think this makes for some very interesting times.

Don't know - Hope she wasn't elected simply because she is a female. I hope that the best candidate won- and I hope it improves your country!
Nonetheless, Congrats on electing the first female Prime Minister!

If we were to vote on a leader of "A Moving Train" - I'd vote for SBC! :D Not because she's a "she"
But because she's got the brains around here!!

best of luck with your new PM mate!! ;)

She didn't get voted in, the Rudd after meeting with her and other MP's last night stepped down and she was the only candidate...so uncontested.
And no, certainly not in just because she is female.......it has taken a long time for females to achieve leading roles in government here, so hopefully she can bring a new aspect of leadership to government. From what I have seen of her in the media, she has always presented as a very sure and well informed person, and not known for making rediculous statements or decisions.

    So fingers crossed.

Sorry Mate, you'll have to excuse me, I can barely understand my own Government---Seems like some interesting events took place- I'll have to do some research.....

Australia is a beautiful land with wonderful people - Good Luck with your new head of state mate!! ;)

Don't get me wrong I like Julia and hope she wins the next election but this is just window dressing. Policy and strategy will not change. The party just thinks that the Australian public won't elect Kevin Rudd for another term. Maybe their right maybe not. We will just have to wait and see.
I can't go the library anymore, everyone STINKS!!

Even though it goes against my nature as a kiwi to say this, I have to agree with you - love Aussie and Aussie's. Am heading to Sydney in a couple of weeks and really looking forward to spending time in one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

OMG just watching K-Rudd to his speach...he is struggling. Lots of pauses, bottom lip trembling. Poor bugger, I feel sorry for him. It reminds me a lot of high school bullies and those who loved to gang up on others. Chin up Ruddy, now you can move back to the best state in the country.... :D We still love ya! Fuck it's gotta be hard job you tried to do, sure know I would never attempt it.

Well, personally, although yeah, I kinda feel a little sorry for K Rudd, he wasn't really a great PM - not going to whinge about the cash he handed over, but still. Yes, the policies are still the same no matter if it's Julia Gillard or Kevin Rudd as PM, BUT, she does seem to know what she's doing. She has always come across as a smart, educated, intelligent woman. Just my opinion, but I think this is a great thing for our country. And it's not just that she's a woman (although that automatically gets my vote!), but she really does seem much more suited to the job than K Rudd ever was.

I think Tony Abbot would probably make a good PM too, although some of his views are definitely not mine. Julia Gillard on the other hand looks like she can do a decent job, without too many extreme opinions of her own.

Definitely a day to remember in history though, and I'm not really that into politics so that's saying something!

hmm, i'm not so sure of that saggitarius.

i'm pretty sure the comment she made a few days ago when she said "There's more chance of me becoming the full forward for the Dogs than there is any change in the Labor Party" (the dogs being her favorite AFL team), could be considered a ridiculous statement.

especially now she has come out publically and said "I asked my colleagues to make a leadership change". like she wasn't considering that a few days ago? she's fooling herself if she thinks the people can't see through that. backstabbing at it's finest. that's politics for you i guess. i'm not a fan of Labor's current policies at all.

have to give kudos to Rudd for withdrawing Australian troops from Iraq (as promised in his election campaign). you know we are still waiting for Obama to honor his pre election promise on troop withdrawal in Iraq.

mostly though, i thank him for his real, meaningful and heartfelt apology to the stolen generations. it had been such a long time coming. that's a pretty decent legacy to leave behind.

Note: the following comment is based on very little knowledge of australian politics and australians although i have been there for a month or so ...

    **************
i was very optimistic when k. rudd was elected the pm a few years ago ... howard is what our current pm is in canada ... one who governs for the interests of big corporations ... mainly oil and gas ... howard's stance and inaction on climate change is the same as our current gov't and it gave me hope that people saw his right wing agenda for what it is ...

having said that - it is also my belief that moving a progressive agenda is virtually impossible unless you live in a progressive society ... people have to buy into your ideas and programs otherwise they will just work against you ... that is how i see this thing being played out ...

rudd looks like a man of integrity and similar to the former liberal leader here in canada ... integrity is not what people seek in their leaders ... which is a sad reflection of us i suppose ...
