Baby beluga Nala died after a 2 week illness which they found was attributed to rocks and pennies lodged in her airway. This is the second baby beluga to die there in 5 years... And a good example of why these animals should NOT be held in captivity. I refuse to go to aquariums and zoos... conservation reserves only for me.

very sad...who are we to take them out of their environment in the first place. Humans are the most curiuos creatures and we are the ones who end up fucking everything up in the process.

The Greater Vancouver Zoo is even worse. They've had SO many run ins with Animal Protection socities, everything from unhealthy pens to not being fed to mixing animals in areas they shouldnt, (ie, four zebras died when left with buffalo)

i've kayaked with belugas ... words can't express the feeling of having them swim around your boat (on their own free will) ... ultimately, it's people who goto zoos and aquariums that perpetuate this ...

    Exactly!
People who go to zoos are blindly cruel to what they are supporting.
They'd rather just push their stroller around and smile and not think about what the animals go through.

I had one person tell me it was "nostalgic" to them to go to a zoo. Its probably nostalgic to the animal who sees you walking around freely... they don't get to do that anymore.
