I can see how it gets mistaken as "a furry thing," but come on people... really? The actual lyrics are so beautiful in their symmetry, especially when considered in the context of the rest of the song -- it's the best line on the album, IMO, and I'm sad that so many people seem to mishear it.

"You are everything, and everything is you. Me, you. You, me. It's all related." Reminds me of tripping on mushrooms in college. Actually, I think I'm going to add it to my signature block on here. Hell, maybe I'll even start replying to some posts just to get it the exposure it apparently needs. :D

It's "everything." Eddie wrote "a furry thing" in the liner notes to "Yield" as a joke, and some people took it seriously.

I didn't realize it's in the liner notes... that certainly makes it more understandable.

Tremor Christ is another one that has, what I believe to be, an intentional lyrical error: The Vitalogy liner notes say, of course, "Wounded is the organ, he left all... bloodied on the shore." But listening to the song, I've always heard, and I think it makes overwhelmingly more sense, "Wounded is the old man..."
"You are everything, and everything is you. Me, you... you, me -- it's all related."

Eddie just seems to have a great sense of humor for someone that is so thoughtful about people and the world's events. It was very evident during the Philly shows especially night one about Stone leaving the band unless he was allowed to sing.

Same reason the website's lyrics for In Hiding say, "I surfaced when all of my pen wasn't writing," instead of "I surfaced and all of my being was enlightened" (among countless other inaccuracies) -- they were cut-and-pasted from various fan websites a few years ago.

    Furry thing, everything...

Do you think the Mona Lisa would have almost universal appeal if it were simply a beautiful painting? Every person who looks at that face sees a different smile. I see a girl with something to hide. I also hear furry. That's the way I like it and although I hesitate to state that Ed=DaVinci, I will say that he has allowed each of us to feel a stronger connection to his music by letting us, in some small way, to insert ourselves in the music and sunsequently create a more personal experience.

No... Ed writes wierd lyrics... like:
"All the seals sang, on a Porsche a little sad..."
What the heck does that mean?
    ...
And such is the mystery of Ed.

The songs and their meanings and their lyrics are what you want them to be, what you believe them to be, that is ed's "furriness", that is the beauty of it. It touches you in whatever way... That is why it always makes me laugh when people talk about Ed as the one that mumbles, that you can't understand what he is saying. His voice is an instrument, hear what you want...

there's a lot of that in the old liner notes....not so much if you buy the reissues

i get a real kick out of ed's humor

And we all believe, we all believe it!

I see your point, and I agree with you to a large extent. But say a healthy number of fans honestly thought he sang, "Don't call me daughter, not fit to... the bitch's cat will remind me." Would you really defend it as a matter of opinion? I mean, some things are a matter of interpretation (what one takes from the Mona Lisa, for instance), and some things are just objectively right/wrong.

I know, right. My little sister always thought the words to Butter Man were: "She dreams of butter, she dreams of bread... she can't find the butter, man."

I used to argue this point as well UNTIL I read Ismael. I'm convinced now he did really mean "furry", since much of Yield was inspired by the book.
  • Either way you "hear" it...I hear one of the best songs they have written. Such a powerful yet melodic song. I love the middle break and how matt kills it...

Interesting. Maybe it's a homographic pun, which makes it even more impressive. But there's no way the symmetry of "You are everything, and everything is you" was purely coincidental. It's too poetic and fits too flawlessly within the context of the song.

Maybe you mean live, but I'm pretty sure Irons drummed on Yield. Though maybe that's a matter of "opinion" here too :D

I see your point about devining a correct lyric but I think in this case, when the line clearly makes sense in both forms it is intended to be interpereted in more than one way. It's not as if we are arguing over four or five virgins and a pelican or a few other obviously non-sensical permiatations. It's intrinsic point is to hold a double-entendre (sp?). That being the case I'm not sure if anyone, even Ed, could give you the "correct" lyric.

well holy shit... it's not "furry"? i'm being serious. i've owned yield for 8 years and every time that song comes on, i sing "furry".
this thread just blew my mind. even more so than when i found out it was "everything has CHAINS" and not "changed".

"Wounded is the organ, he left all... bloodied on the shore" I believe the be what is sang in the song and what I have always heard. It also makes tons of sense. Dead soldiers leave bloody organs on the shore in combat.

I have also always heard "a furry thing."

The Vs lyrics book is full of homophonic puns:

    "Torture from you to me"

    "Abduct it from the street"
    "Abducted from the street"

Note the symmetry in the song structure, too. Instead of verse-chorus-verse-chorus, it's more like verse-chorus-chorus-verse. I think of that song as a musical mountain, with the peak in the middle between the two choruses with the building guitar riffs and drum fills. When the last verse quietly concludes, you're safely on the ground on the other side of the mountain.
