This should get interesting.......
Why didn't Republicans secure the board when they were in power?
Where was the tea party rallies? Where was all the outspoken conservatives? Where was Ariel, Godfather, and Unsung? Does anyone remember?

The White House on Monday denied Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl’s claim that President Barack Obama told him privately that he would not work to secure the border unless it was part of a comprehensive immigration reform package.

In a video that started circulating among conservative blogs over the weekend, the Arizona Republican is seen telling supporters in North Phoenix that in a private meeting in the Oval Office, Obama said “the problem” with border enforcement measures is that “if we secure the border then [Republicans] won’t have any reason to support comprehensive immigration reform.”

Kyl said the president’s supposed statement is proof that Democrats “don’t want to secure the border unless or until it is combined with comprehensive immigration reform.”

But in a statement to POLITICO, White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer denied Kyl’s account of the conversation, saying “the president didn’t say that and Senator Kyl knows it.”

“There are more resources dedicated toward border security today than ever before, but, as the President has made clear, truly securing the border will require a comprehensive solution to our broken immigration system,” Pfeiffer said.

Kyl has been one of the most outspoken critics of the president on immigration reform and has before accused Democrats of holding up border security in order to keep it as a chip to negotiate for broader reform.

Later in the video, Kyl says the reason the federal government has not secured the border is that Democrats “don’t want to do it.”

“They want to get something in return for doing their duty,” the Arizona Republican said. “You don’t have to have comprehensive reform to secure the border, but you have to secure the border to get comprehensive reform.”

Any word on when the National Guard will be leaving Iraq and actually guarding the US?

Btw Bush was a pro amnesty nutjob too. That's why nothing got done although the fence was being constructed during his watch.

I did not hear about this till now...never heard about it while "Republicans were in power."

now, who knows what their conversation was, so I'm not sure who to believe...

but... isn't securing our borders (whatever the hell that means), without being part of comprehensive immigration reform pretty much like throwing money away?

Let's not do anything about he demand for illegal workers, or do anything for/about the ones in this country already, but lets dump billions and billions of dollars into a fence and more security. Until you do something to address the demand, it's like paying someone a billion dollars to stick their finger in the dike.

It reminds me of the war on drugs in the 80's... let's jack up prison sentences and fines, spend millions on raids, but don't do much to help get people off of drugs to curb the demand.

I am not a huge fan of the minute men by any means, but they were there. There was all kinds of discussion by pundits for years regarding immigration. You might just not have been paying attention until recently. The law in AZ and the uproar it has brought the immigration debate back to the main stage. But it has always been there.

    *edit

Just realized I forgot to answer the question about why they didn't do anything about it, it is the same as why they haven't for years...votes.

The border will be "open" as long as business interests control Washington. That is all there is to it, folks. The border is open so big corporate agraculture can save a few bucks on labor, that is it. And as long as the food industry is throwing campaign money at the politicians, this will never be resolved. It has nothing to do with anything else. Also food prices will not necessarily go up if they hired Americans. That is another red herring, fear based ploy. The market will bear what the market will bear and big agraculture may just make less profit. This is not a republican/democrat/independent/liberal/conservative issue. It is just like anything else...it is about money. We don't need no fence or National Gaurdsmen stationed every 20 feet along the border. All we have to do is crack down on the businesses that hire illegals and...voila!

I get the point of the question. I just wonder why in the hell no one has done anything with this for so long, repubs, dems, girlscouts, whoever.

Well, I would think you'd have to have a short-term plan in place while working on the long-term plan.

I also remember the minute men... Harassing brown people at home depot.... And I remember the minute men rallies... But where was the board security on when the Republicans were in power?

I agree, but isn't that essentially what Kyl is arguing against?
