It's people texting, changing their radio, reading books (yes I've seen this done), and just not paying attention while driving. Until you take the human factor out of the equation, it really won't matter how fast or slow cars go, there will still be stupid drivers.
On a side note, like someone else mentioned, a lot of people now days do their racing on the track with their cars. Tracks, mostly dragstrips, have gone out of their way in many instances to give teens and adults a safe and secure place to race their hot rods within a controlled environment.
As far as cars that go fast, my street car goes about 90, but my wife's will do about 165. I don't think either of them have been over 75 ever. My wife wanted hers for comfort, and I am really not concerned with what I drive. I liked the gas milage and safety features.
Now, the car I actually race on a dragstrip will do 0-220MPH in about 6.2 seconds. I also have a "slower" one that will do 0-180 in 7.5 seconds. So when it comes to actual speed, I probably have most on this board covered, and I can tell you that it is like a drug. But as long as you are experienced, have respect for what you are doing, and manic about safety equipment, it's not as risky as it may seem.
i'm all for racetracks as far as if you wanna do it, do it in that controlled enviornment
my point is why do they make cars, to be driven on roads with a speed limit of 65, that go 3x the limit
you say you and your wife never go over 75
as probably 85% of all drivers do
then why are they made this way?The whole world will be different soon... - EV

I probably would not be here today if I didn't have a car that accelerated quickly.
People drown every year, should we pave over the lakes and rivers? close all the pools?
accidents are sad, but speed is not always the issue, as the list posted on this thread earlier indicated there are more things to worry about the other driver doing more than whether or not he is speeding.that’s right! Or make all of our roads like those old driving rides at amusement parks... the ones where there is that center rail, so you have to stay on the road.My whole life

maybe thatWhen you are driving on a straight road for 6 hours, falling asleep is your biggest concern. :( Also, I think the interstate speed limit is 80 mph for most of the great plain states.
But as noted, the vast majority of cars can't go over 95 - 105 due to factory limit switches. My Chevy cuts off fuel at around 95 mph (not that I've gotten that fast). Standard BMW's are set at around 115 mph unless you get the sports suspension which raises it to 155 mph.
Anyway, I'm guessing that 90% of cars out there are already conforming to your idea.Be Excellent To Each OtherParty On, Dudes!0 -

I was kinda curious to some answers to this question...so I googled it.

I found that to be the reason that I was thinking. Also, If your vehicle's engine was running as hard as it could all the time at top speed, your engine would break down and you would need to replace it very often, including oil changes like every 100 miles or something. How fast your car can go is proportionate to how much the car weighs and sometimes cars are built that can go incredibly fast. Cars like that cost a lot of money and hopefully the dumbshits that buy them have enough self control to not kill themselves while speeding.
It's also a freedom thing I guess. Some people drive the highway at 70 others drive it at 90. Some people have two beers and others have 20.Sometimes I burn like a dot on the Sun...0
