Please try to put aside the troubles he had in life, and try and remember the voice he had- the soundtrack to some of our lifes. To me Layne was music- his voice carried in equal measure, pain, passion and even hope.

Brilliant voice, powerful and emotional, great lyricist.
His lyrics mean a lot to me.

"wake up" is one of the best songs ever written. (May be the best to me) First time I heard it, totally blew my mind on to another planet.
Such a sad song, yet beautiful at the same time.

PS: One of Mike McCready's best solos, and that bass line is just epic. :D

  • Layne is my favorite singer of all time. His voice was one of a kind, I've never heard a voice that can literally sound like pure evil and bliss all in one. In my opinion he had the most powerful voice of the 90's, it's a damn shame he's not still with us. Mad Season just showed how much potential he had to grow as an artist.

Heh, that's really cool! :) I sure do miss Layne, would have loved to see AIC perform with him still around... And yes, Wake Up definitely is one of the best songs he has (co-)written.

Miss Him, get the feeling he'd still be making music, such a distictive voice. When "Man in a box" came on mtv back in the day i thought, cool new angry Heavy Metal band, there next album, i was like what happened...but i think i like this even better. If it wasn't for Kurt, how much bigger would Layne's Legecy be?

I went to see Megadeth  early 90's with a friend but we argued in the bar beforehand.
I went into the auditorium to wait for the first support band billed as "Alice In Chains" I had never heard of them.
They came on stage and I had never seen a more mesmerising front man as Layne ... I was left crying at how his performance affected me ... no one sounded like him and never will ... he was a star that shone for a brief moment ... I'll never forget how each time I saw him live I was always left in a high state of emotion

  • terribly sad loss.
funny how lyrics so strong can mean one thing on the surface, but when you look beneath, you realize it can mean so much more... No one can fill that void. Sorry for Jerry Cantrell; Alice in Chains just aint Alice in Chains without Layne...whether Jerry wrote most the music or not.... AIC will always be a top fav for me.

    Jar of Flies
    was my 1st foray into
    Alice in Chains.
    Nutshell knocked me
    the hell over...
    still does.
Down in a Hole is still
    my favourite, though,
    esp. the unplugged version.
    Cheers.
