Drumming

I recently saw a post on Youtube for the video to "The Fixer" and some kid, who must think he knows more about music than professional musicians, commented that Matt Cameron is the wrong drummer for Pearl Jam. He argued that his rhythm's are to advanced and his odd time signatures don't fit in with the band. He said Matt should be a straight time keeping 4/4 drummer. Needless to say, he drew quite a few responses to that. I like to compare Matt to a Kieth Moon type drummer, someone who can still keep time, while also playing his own style.

IMO Matt Cameron and Keith Moon are on opposite sides of the spectrum.
Matt's style draws from many different great drummers. The brilliance of Matt is that he plays off of everything thats going on musically in whatever situation you put him in. Again, he draws from many different great drummers of the past and applies it to his own style.
Keith Moon was a very "fly by the seat of his pants" drummer, playing fills and hitting crashes in the middle of a verse -for example. He barely stuck to a regimented pattern or groove. Matt on the other hand is solid as fuck, which unless you have a trained ear, or if youre a drummer, many people won't understand how great he is.
anyway, the kid has his own opinion, doesn't mean he's right... at all.

This kid is a joke. Matt is a fantastic drummer! It takes me some time to work on stuff he plays on. Backspacer has some of his best work on there.
