EUROPA and the World Cup. PJ in the middle.

Football (soccer) is the # 1 sport worldwide. The World Cup is the major single sport event. And Europe, along with South America, has the most candidates to win it.

Now, as you know, PJ will visit some of these countries soon. Germany, Spain, Hollland, and Italy come to my attention. But, mostly Italy and Spain. These two PJ concerts might be the most epic shows the band could have in its history. I haven´t checked past WC´s with past PJ shows. This would be a great thing to know if someone could point out some past events. Other sports, too.

Italians and spanish people are crazy about football. I´m a hard core red sox fan. Sox-Yankees stays behind any game in the WC to these WHOLE countries. Remember the WC is between nations. Not clubs.

Both Italy and Spain have failed in their opening games. However, they are both still strong candidates to reach the final game. It could all change if they fail to be the leaders in their respective groups, but this might be the scenario:

PJ will visit Italy on the 6th of July. The same day as one semifinals. The other semifinal is on the 7th. These games will be at around 19:30 Italy time. Now, it depends if they make it of course, and if they finish 1st or 2nd in their qualifying group. Two things might happen if Italy plays on the 6th. The PJ gig will be half empty or full. By the time PJ finishes, the game would have concluded, i think. And if the result is favorable, can you all imagine the vibe in the crowd? It would mean their ticket to the final game. If Italy plays on the 7th, I think the gig would be more epic. Everyone would have been celebrating all week and continue celebrating with PJ one night before the semifinal game!! Since 1930, Italy has won the WC 4 times (in almost 80 years!).

Now Spain. Spain has never won the WC, despite having the major football league in the world. Barcelona F.C. and Real Madrid come to mind? PJ will rock out Bilbao July 9th. Two nights before the Final Game :!: :!: I would be a fool if I were to try and describe the mood of the crowd at the PJ show that night, if, only if Spain qualifies to the final game. This would be THE PJ SHOW to witness. Besides the fact that it is a PJ show, it would be a party. A big fucking party. An incredible big fucking party.

Anything could happen at the WC, but anyone that is planning on attending these shows, might have to be aware of the fifa WC, and root for these teams. You might have a possibility to be at one of the most memorable PJ shows.

I’m curious to know whether the US followers of this forum follow the World Cup 2010 and the US national team. It’s after all the biggest sporting event in the world after the Olympics.

I'm not too sure about Bilbao partying when Spain qualify for the World Cup final. This won't be a discussion about politics, but there are quite large parts of the Basque country not too happy with being part of Spain. For this reason, the Spain football/soccer squad always will have at least on Basque player to lessen emotions (as it will have Catalan players).

PJ play in London on the 25th, and with their current performances there's a pretty good chance the English will go home on the 23rd.

Now, it could very well be a party for the Dutch. Their team have a pretty good chance of reaching the final 16 and will play on either 28th or 29th, while PJ play Nijmegen on the 27th.

If Germany survive their group and eventually get into the final 8, they're still in the tournament when PJ play in Berlin on the 30th.

There's a pretty small chance that France will continue in the tournament, but if this miracle happens, they might play on Saturday the 3rd.

And yes, the Italians might play a Semi-Final on the 6th or 7th of July when PJ plays in Venezia on the 6th.

Finally, PJ will play Portugal the day before the World Cup final. I don't advice to bet on it, but Portugal could play that final.

PJ have a history with big football/soccer tournaments and playing in Europe. They played in Europe between 5 June 1992 and 26 June 1992 with the European Championship being played between 10 June and the final on the 26th

PJ played in Nurnberg on the night Germany won 2-0 against Scotland. And guess which country won the tournament on the day Pearl Jam played there: little Denmark, beating the Germans 2-0. Pearl Jam played the huge Roskilde festival, and nobody had expected the Danish to be in the final (and not even in the tournament)…

The US team lost 1-2 against Iran in 1998 when Pearl Jam played in Utah.

There was a lot of coincidence in 2000 with Pearl Jam playing Europe between 23 May and 30 June (unfortunately being the Roskilde date). PJ played at Pinkpop on June 12, one day after co-hosting nation The Netherlands had won their first match. Eddie Vedder wore an orange shirt, the color of the Dutch national team.

The Czechs didn't make it in the tournament, but were in the middle of it when PJ played Prague on June 14. The same for Slovenia. PJ played Italy on 20 and 22 and the Italians would win their quarter final on the 24th. The Germans had been eliminated five days before Pearl Jam played in Berlin.

During the World Cup 2006, Pearl Jam played in Pittsburh the day after the US team was eliminated. When Italy and France disputed the final, Pearl Jam played in California.

the last show on this upcoming leg is just outside Lisbon on Saturday July 10th.
the next day is the WC Champion game.
if somehow Portugal makes it to that game, then Lisbon will be the place to be. 8-)

the midnite July 4th show in Belgium is going to be the epic show on this leg.

That would be insane! Add free beer at the concert, too, and its on!

Lisboa, of course. But I´m afraid Portugal in the final is a looooong shot. It would be great, though. For the show.

I did forget about London. But, its true. England might not have enough luck against Slovenia.

And Feiraco, that´s great details you gave. Thanks. You prob know more about the basque issue, but I think it would be a celebration, no?

I know a reason for the Irish to celebrate the World Cup tonight....

Within a few hours the faith of France will be decided. The French team reached the World Cup by foul play (that is: scoring with the hand) against the Irish team. The French team is a chaos and they need a miracle to survive. I'm pretty sure the Irish will be delighted if the French team is kicked out...

    not too predicable?

since 1996 only 3 teams have ever won the league.

and england fans are loyal??? thats fucking hilarious... your own fans booed the players off the pitch at the end of the Algerian game. Thats not loyal.

passionate? if you call ripping the seats out of Irish football stadiums passionate then fair enough.. or rampaging through Europe wrecking the place... for passion you cannot compete with South American countries.

Thank god for the unbiased Scots version ;-) Wembley '77 ring a bell? Rangers in Manchester?

But on the whole I couldn't agree more with your post.

I'm English and hope they get through their group. So they can lose on pens in the last 16 with Cole n Terry missing their kicks-couldnt happen to nicer people!

I'm tired of spoiled English footballers.

Personally the fans in the stadium have every right to boo. If PJ put on a show as insipid as England's vs Alg the place would be up in arms. What was unexceptable was Rooney's behaviour. Time for him to grow up and accept some responsibility in the real world a performance like that coupled with his behaviour would get you the sack.

My last point...the players are complaining of boredom in a 5star hotel with incredible facilities. One,at least, quted as saying it's like a prison. These players earn £1000's a day. A day!!! They're saying they are bored at work at the height of their profession!

Perhaps before the next time they complain of boredom and likening their accommodation to a prison they might like to reflect on the millions in South Africa who live on less than £2 a day or those who went to prison because of the colour of their skin.

Disucssing religion, politics or football with people you don't know will spark a little conflict.. I make a point of banning those topics at work..

Saying that, I'll be catching the England match tomorrow. I don't have high hopes, but at least we're there. It's be nice for an underdog to win.

I went to a PJ show that I thought was horribly average - they didn't want to be there. I was angry with myself for sounding like a spoilt fan for seeing them too many times on the same tour :)

Exactly! There are a lot of rumours about press injunctions at the moment. When this comp is over, a lot of horrible stories are probably going to hit the papers. Things that will make Terry's off-the-pitch antics sound tame.

This is what you get for spoiling 17 year olds and wrapping them up in cotton wool.

i don't care about the Scottish league either.

other than that your domestic league has been won by one of 3 teams in the last 15 years. That's only 1 team more than the Scottish league.

Scotland is very sunny today

Well, England is in the next round. However, I doubt the english fans are happy. Their team has yet to find their game play. And to top it off, qualified as second in the group. The whole world, even the dozen of US followers, expected England to win the group standings. But, PJ is PJ (and London is London) and I´m sure the show is going to be wild. Please post if Eddie says something related to the English team.

And England´s 2nd round rival: Germany. The match is on the 27th. PJ will make Berlin twist and shout on the 30th. If Germany wins, Berlin is going to be a great show, and if they don´t, it´s prob gonna be great, too! But just imagine if they win. It´s going to be a great match and show, no matter what.

Nijmegen on the 27th. No game for Holland, but for sure the dutch will be happy with their team´s first place spot in the group and excited as hell for the 2nd round match the following night. Rival to be determined.

Great month for PJ to pick for touring Europe!

The only possible celebration with football and PJ will be in Bilbao. That´s if Spain is able to beat Germany this week.

I am rooting for Uruguay. If they manage to win their 3rd world cup it will definitely be the best world cup for me. And who knows, maybe PJ will visit Montevideo on the next latin tour, presumably next year (?).
