Ryan Adams Love is Hell

I think this may be my favorite Ryan Adams album, but he has so much to choose from. Love is Hell is just such a perfect piece of art. The vibe off this one is pretty dark. From Political Scientist on you just have one brilliant song followed by another one. Afraid Not Scared. Ive always loved This House is Not For Sale, Anybody Wanna Take Me Home. I dont care what anyone says, Wonderwall the Oasis version is pretty much the definition of a perfect pop song. And Ryan's version is brilliant in that he takes a jubulent or happy song and makes it pretty damn depressing, those chords at the end kill me. The Shadowlands is brilliant in the vibe it sets. I dont know where the Shadowlands are but it seems like a depressing place. Always has reminded me of Springsteens Darkness of the Edge of Town, this specific place, everywhere USA, but this place where you need to get out of, but how, and when? Its the place you get stuck in, and cant leave for whatever reason World War 24 has always been musically beautiful to me, The melody is so amazing.

I could go on, but the point is, this is a perfect album. A showcase for one of the best living songwriters.

It's a depressingly beautiful album. I used to listen to it when I was down, somehow it always made me feel at ease. Interesting you mentioned Springsteen's Darkness in relation to Shadowlands. Never thought of that before, but I guess it's kinda true come to think of it.

my eldest 'borrowed' this album from me without asking(usually a quasi-capital offense in my house). i not so secretly smiled when she told me.

I agree, probably his best work, in two parts nonetheless.

I've always felt this was his best effort. The vibe and darkness, like you said, is a great theme for the album and it's songs.

Hotel Chelsea Nights is probably my favorite track. Thank You, Louise, The Shadowlands, Love Is Hell, Avalanche all runner ups.

    Great, great record.

This is his second best album after Cold Roses IMO. :D

I really like Heartbreaker and Gold, but there is just something about this one that pulls at the heart strings...

"English Girls Approximately" might be his best song.

I really like this album and love that song.
