I think this is from a show at Trees in Dallas. My friend was there. I think he said he even met Kurt that night, and Kurt was in a real bad mood. Have to check with him. I think this is the show where he met Kurt though.

that's on the live! tonight! sold out video/dvd. i read a biography years ago, forgot exactly why it said this happened....there was shit going on before the show though, i think something to do with the crappy PA system that belonged to the bouncer or one of his friends

i just looked it up, i'm 99.9% sure the PA system belonged to a friend of the bouncer

An intense, violent performance of the song can be seen on the 1994 home video Live! Tonight! Sold Out!!. Cobain smashed the PA system at the club with his guitar, frustrated that it had consistently malfunctioned. (Viewers can see a pallet covering the PA, which was added in case Cobain decided to take a second shot.) Soon after Kurt decided to jump into the crowd. A bouncer tried to push him back onstage; Cobain responded by hitting the bouncer in the head with his guitar, drawing blood, after which the much larger man hurled Cobain to the floor and the performance came to a halt with band members, fans and crew separating the two.

  • There was a problem with the monitor system. If you listen to the video - you're hearing basically what Kurt heard on stage. It was a wash of cymbals. You can see early in the show where he motions to the monitor board guy to turn up his monitors. Finally, after playing the quieter song "Polly" and still not being able to hear himself, he smashed the monitor board in half with his guitar. Since the small venue was overflowing with rowdy people, the staff reluctantly allowed them to continue on with the show. Then during "Love Buzz", Kurt does a stage dive and the club's bouncer grabs Kurt by the hair and takes a jab at him (it's kinda hard to see in video). Kurt struck out with his guitar and hit the bouncer on the head, drawing blood. Then the bouncer attacked Kurt as he got back on stage. After the scuffle, the bouncer was removed, there was a brief pause and the show again continued until it's conclusion. After the show, the band was quickly loaded into a taxi. There was some traffic blocking them and right before they pulled away, the bouncer appeared and smashed the taxi window and tried to grab at Kurt. The taxi speeded away just in time, into the sunset. Nirvana's FOH soundman Craig sheepishly admits that Kurt was high as a kite and acting like an asshole that night.

Though in all fairness to Kurt, if I was on the verge of being a millionaire, and I could get away with anything I wanted, I would have smashed a dozen crappy monitor systems by now...
