Israel backed by army of cyber-soldiers
From Yonit Farago in Jerusalem
WHILE Israel fights Hezbollah with tanks and aircraft, its supporters are campaigning on the internet.
Israel’s Government has thrown its weight behind efforts by supporters to counter what it believes to be negative bias and a tide of pro-Arab propaganda. The Foreign Ministry has ordered trainee diplomats to track websites and chatrooms so that networks of US and European groups with hundreds of thousands of Jewish activists can place supportive messages.

In the past week nearly 5,000 members of the World Union of Jewish Students (WUJS) have downloaded special “megaphone” software that alerts them to anti-Israeli chatrooms or internet polls to enable them to post contrary viewpoints. A student team in Jerusalem combs the web in a host of different languages to flag the sites so that those who have signed up can influence an opinion survey or the course of a debate.

Jonny Cline, of the international student group, said that Jewish students and youth groups with their understanding of the web environment were ideally placed to present another side to the debate.

“We’re saying to these people that if Israel is being bashed, don’t ignore it, change it,” Mr Cline said. “A poll like CNN’s takes just a few seconds to vote in, but if thousands take part the outcome will be changed. What’s vital is that the international face of the conflict is balanced.”

Doron Barkat, 29, in Jerusalem, spends long nights trawling the web to try to swing the debate Israel’s way. “When I see internet polls for or against Israel I send out a mailing list to vote for Israel,” he said. “It can be that after 15 minutes there will be 400 votes for Israel.

“It’s very satisfying. There are also forums where Lebanese and Israelis talk.”

Israel’s Foreign Ministry must avoid direct involvement with the campaign but is in contact with international Jewish and evangelical Christian groups, distributing internet information packs.

Amir Gissin, the Israeli Foreign Ministry’s public relations director, said: “The internet’s become a leading tool for news, shaping the world view of millions. Our problem is the foreign media shows Lebanese suffering, but not Israeli. We’re bypassing that filter by distributing pictures showing how northern Israelis suffer from Katyusha rocket attacks.”

What exactly was anti-semetic about that article?

I would think that mass-mobilizations of like-minded students, to overwhelm opinion polls and sway debate could be considered more anti-arab than reporting the story would be anti-semetic.

Yes, there is something wrong with this. These people should be asking why Israel is being bashed and addressing the facts, and not simply giving unconditional support to Israel's crimes.

B, you don't think that any opinion is valid unless it is in agreement with your own!

Nice attempt to change the subject.

The above article isn't concerned with opinions. The above article reports a government-backed drive to flood internet sites with pro-Israel propaganda.

I mean I think that's stupid, but I don't see what's wrong with it. Besides, I don't think anyone on this site is being supported by the Israeli government, and to quote you directly "there is something wrong with this. These people should be asking why Israel is being bashed and addressing the facts, and not simply giving unconditional support to Israel's crimes." You didn't say the government program was wrong. You said that people having these opinions was wrong, basically because you disagree with them and they should be spending their time doing research so as to enlighten themselves and come to see the world the same way you do.

Yosi - You dont see a government making an explicit effort to hide the truth as wrong? Why do you think they need this program if there is nothing to hide? This sounds like something Nazi Germany would do.

exactly...this is the same thing the CIA has done on numerous occasions.

Or perhaps they simply think that the reality of the situation over there is often misunderstood, and they want to empower people to offer a different, and their opinion truer, perspective. Just because it's the Israeli government doesn't make it nefarious. And please, Nazi Germany? They aren't building Potemkin villages here. Besides, it is only appears to you as an effort to "hide the truth" because you assume that you already know the truth. From my perspective this could just as easily be a corrective to a lot of untruths, or at the very least an effort at providing a much needed perspective that would add to a fuller picture of the "truth."

The truth is right there. If your perspective is blinded by a flag or religion, then you shouldn't be surprised when others dont see things the same as you.

I've been around long enough to know that if you are absolutely sure that you know the truth about something then you probably don't. The world's a complicated place. It doesn't lend itself to easy understanding.

    How deep

Truth is Israel's crimes are 'documented'. Crimes the world has seen. No pussy footing around that Yosi - however you wish to see it (or rather not see it).

israel is well on its way to self-destruction by its own behaviour.

these cyber-soldiers, who openly and loudly give unconditional support to Israel's crimes, don't fool everyone. in fact, i encourage them to keep doing what they are doing. they are providing a platform for more discussion on the situation and the truth is finally getting out to more and more people every single day. more people are aware of Israels attrocious crimes against humanity, more people are aware of Israels lies, and more people are saying enough is enough.
