ranking albums- an exercise in futility?

I see the occasional thread asking people to rank the albums. i've tried but I keep changing my mind. How do you say this album is #6 and that one is #7? anyone else feel like that? Each album has some great and some not so great, IMO, and each one is different an unique in it's own right. I do have albums that i like better than others, but the best I can do is sort of put them in groups. This is just the studio albums:
group 1: Vitalogy, Binaural- Vitalogy rocks big time pretty consistently throughout. Binaural is a very textured album and has some of their most ambitious (I don't know if that's the right word) stuff on it.
group 2: Ten, Vs, Pearl Jam, - Sure it gets knocked for being too mainstream or too polished or produced, or whatever, but you can't deny the quality of the music. It rocks. Vs and Pearl jam each have songs that are among their best and ones i could do without very good albums but not on the level of Vitalogy or Binaural, IMO.
Group 3: No Code, Yield, Riot Act- Each of these albums has a couple of songs i really like but for the most part, as a whole, these albums don't do that much for me. To me, Yield is their most forgettable studio album, but I hate saying that becasue they are such a good band that i'd still rather listen to those albums than a lot of stuff from other bands.
i won't even try to group live albums. I love them all! especially boots.
how would you guys group the albums or do you just rank them 1 -7?
